Tasting Notes

The Shiraz brings an exotic floral fragrance and the juicy expansive fruit palate. Touriga naçional being naturally high in tannin brings a firm but friendly structure and spice to the blend. A violet perfume lifted nose, juicy mulberry fruits with aniseed spice. The wine is fleshy, intriguing with plenty of spice complexity neatly wrapped in a blanket of tannin

Winemaking

Whole berry fermentation was employed with both varieties to encourage the fleshy fruit-full palate. Gentle hand plunging twice daily allows for careful tannin extraction. The individual components spent 9 months in old French oak barriques in our underground cellar before blending and bottling

Technical Data

Varietals: 60% Shiraz, 20% Touriga Naçional, 20% Tinta Cao

Region: Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia.

Vines: Shiraz sourced from our Salamenca block planted in 1995 and Touriga naçional sourced from a terraced block that sits above the Shiraz; planted in 1990 and 2013. When the 1990 Touriga naçional vines were planted, the land where it was grown was reclaimed from the encroaching bushland and dubbed the New Territories.

Cellaring: This wine has been made with the intention to be an early drinking style of wine; fragrant, vibrant and delicious in its youth. It will continue to evolve for some years under suitable cellaring conditions however this is not required.

Critic Scores

A blend of 60/20/20% shiraz/touriga nacional/tinta cão. Matured in older French oak. The only two golds in Class 10 – Other Red Blends at last year's Yarra Valley Wine Show were this and the Dry Red No. 3, with this wine edging out its stablemate for the trophy! A very bright crimson. A fresh and complex combination of blackberries, cherries and crushed violets aplenty. Persistent and primary on the palate with serious yet fine-grained tannins. Long. Lovely. A wine that will age gracefully, too.
