Clonakilla Viognier Nouveau 2026
Tasting Notes
The 2026 Clonakilla Viognier Nouveau is a wine that arrives with energy, like the first breath of spring after a long winter. It is not built for the cellar or for ceremony. It is made to be opened, poured and enjoyed with immediacy. Yet it is no simple quaffer. There is precision here, a quiet elegance beneath the surface, shaped by the cool climate of Murrumbateman and the disciplined hand of a winemaker who knows exactly when to stop and let the fruit speak.
In the glass, it is pale gold with a shimmer of green, bright and clear, catching the light like dew. The nose is alive with aromatic lift. White peach, apricot blossom and nectarine rise first, followed by fresh ginger, lemongrass and a faint hint of crushed fennel seed. There is a touch of citrus oil and green melon, all delivered with clarity and restraint. Unlike many richer Viogniers, this bottling is floral without being heady, ripe without being oily.
On the palate, the wine is clean and crisp, with surprising drive for the variety. The fruit is vivid — pear skin, mandarin, yellow stonefruit — all carried on a stream of acidity that keeps the wine buoyant and dry. There is texture, but it is subtle, a fine phenolic grip that adds shape without weight. Mid-palate, the floral and spicy notes return, bringing ginger root, chamomile and a suggestion of lime leaf. The wine finishes with a snap of freshness and a flicker of salinity, leaving the mouth refreshed, not coated.
This is not Viognier made in the classic northern Rhône mould. It is not seeking opulence. It is Viognier reimagined through the lens of immediacy, of cool harvest mornings and early bottling. The result is a wine of clarity and charm, built for the season and the table.
Food pairings should follow the wine’s tempo. Serve it with lightly spiced Vietnamese salads, grilled prawns with lime and coriander, or roast chicken with preserved lemon and herbs. A soft goat’s cheese or a wedge of young pecorino would echo its freshness beautifully. Serve well chilled, but not icy, in a glass that allows the aromatics to stretch. This wine does not need time. It needs good company.
