If you're wondering why this domaine has earned such a strong reputation, Silex offers a clear answer. It's the flagship wine from Dagueneau, known for its purity, strong mineral character, and long ageing potential.

“The Dagueneau wines are, if anything, even better and more precisely defined than they were during Didier’s time.” Jon Bonne, The New French Wine

Silex is the ultimate Dagueneau wine in many ways: super-mineral, pure, crystalline and typically long-lived.

Tasting Notes

Silex is the ultimate Dagueneau wine in many ways: super-mineral, pure, crystalline and typically very long-lived. Silex means flint, and this wine is produced only from the flint-rich soils on the north-facing slopes of the hill of Saint-Andelain. The vines mostly range between 35 and 65 years old, and yields are kept lower than in most other vineyards. Silex ferments and ages in Dagueneau’s famed cigar-shaped barrels and other casks, and a portion now matures in 220-litre Wineglobe—neutral glass vessels that avoid reduction and allow for lower SO2 levels. Because of the soil type and the concentration of the mature vines, this wine is always intense and often austere when young, typically requiring several years (between five and 10) to truly express itself. The 2023 is a little more open, yet it’s still tightly coiled and incredibly complex with all kinds of citrus, nectarine, sage and sea-spray. Clearly built for aging, it nonetheless makes for wonderful drinking now, especially if given a good decant.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

The flagship Silex parcel sits on distinctive flint-rich (silex) limestone soils that define Pouilly-Fumé's smoky, mineral character. The 2023 vintage presented demanding conditions—cool, humid weather and persistent disease pressure required rigorous canopy management and selective harvesting. Despite these challenges, the flint soils' superior drainage meant the parcel fared comparatively well. Yields remained restricted to 35 hl/ha, maintaining concentration even in a lighter vintage.

Vinification

Silex grapes undergo hand-harvest and fermentation in oak barrels using indigenous yeast populations, a technique that cleanly expresses the terroir. The wine ages on lees for 12–18 months without filtration, allowing mineral character to dominate. The 2023 vintage's fresher profile suits this approach, developing bright minerality and precise structure over time. Extended élevage in neutral and older oak preserves clarity.
