Scharzhofberg is one of the most famous vineyard sites in Germany

A steely bite of acidity and minerality give it a racy, kinetic feel under fresh green apple and lime notes.

Kabinett is a very racy and austere wine, with superb mineral toned complexity and a steely edge of acidity, Riesling at its most ethereal.

    • Description

Scharzhofberg is one of the most famous vineyard sites in Germany, likely to have been established by the Romans. Egon Muller Kabinett is one of the world's great Riesling wines, always delicate, crisp and exquisite on the palate. Drinking brilliantly on release, a Kabinett from a great vintage can develop in the bottle for twenty or thirty years. Situated in Wiltingen in a side valley of the Saar at 180 to 280 metres elevation and facing south, the slopes of Scharzhofberger are quite steep at an incline of 30 to 60. Formed from grey Devonian slate, the soils are very deep with no underlying bedrock. Soils are very well drained yet retain sufficient moisture, a characteristic shared by many of the finest European vineyards. The Einzellage covers sixty seven acres, of which Egon Muller owns seventeen. These include three hectares of ungrafted Riesling vines planted in the last century. Kabinett is a very racy and austere wine, with superb mineral toned complexity and a steely edge of acidity, Riesling at its most ethereal. Pale gold hue. Quartz and lime, citrus and honeysuckle nose. The most striking element is its impeccable balance. A steely bite of acidity and minerality give it a racy, kinetic feel under fresh green apple and lime notes. With some air it begins to acquire a supple richness, hinting at further development to come. A brilliantly composed Riesling wine.
