Tasting Notes

Domaine Georges Vernay Coteau de Vernon Condrieu is a fine white wine, hailing from the Rhône Valley in France. This stunning wine is made entirely of Viognier grapes, and is renowned for its complexity, richness and delicate aroma. The rich bouquet of fruity and floral notes transports the drinker on a sensory journey, with scents of apricots, honeysuckle and lime blossom. On the palate, the wine exhibits a creamy, full-bodied texture, with lively acidity and an exquisite finish. Pair this wine with seafood, chicken or even spicy Asian cuisine. Domaine Georges Vernay Coteau de Vernon Condrieu is a true delight for fine wine connoisseurs.

Critic Scores

Gorgeous nose, full and vivid but serious; ginger and mint over white-fleshed fruits. Full but not heavy, with a gently creamy mid-palate. Amazing salinity and balance, finishing light and fresh. Partly planted by Christine Vernay’s grandfather before the appellation was established: from two mid-slope parcels, one planted in the 1960s, one before 1940, amounting to 4ha. Vinified in foudres and barriques, 5% new oak, for 12 months. Organic.

Still showing beautifully, the 2021 Condrieu Coteau De Vernon is medium to full-bodied and beautifully textured, with white peach and floral notes, as well as vibrant minerality and salinity. It's balanced, long, and elegant on the palate, and is a brilliant, fresher, focused, yet concentrated Condrieu that has so much to love. Drink bottles over the coming decade or so. Drink 2025-2035.

Vineyard Cultivation

Domaine Georges Vernay, based at Condrieu in the northern Rhone, is credited with rescuing both the Condrieu appellation and its Viognier grape from near-extinction in the mid-twentieth century. Coteau de Vernon is the estate's flagship Condrieu, drawn from around four hectares on two mid-slope parcels - one planted in the 1960s, the other before 1940, partly by Christine Vernay's grandfather before the appellation existed. The steep, terraced slopes carry the decomposed-granite (arzelle) soils typical of Condrieu, and the estate is farmed organically. The 2021 season in the northern Rhone was cool and challenging, marked by spring frost and reduced yields, producing a fresher, more tightly wound style than warmer recent vintages.

Vinification

Hand-harvested fruit from the old Vernon parcels is whole-bunch pressed and fermented, with the wine raised in a combination of foudres and barriques, only around 5% of them new, for roughly twelve months. This restrained approach to oak preserves the variety's white-fleshed stone fruit, ginger and floral character while lending a gently creamy mid-palate. Extended elevage on fine lees builds texture and the wine's notable saline length without masking freshness. Malolactic fermentation and low intervention allow the granite terroir to show through in a balanced, mineral-driven Condrieu of real tension.
