Tasting Notes

The Giant Steps Tarraford Vineyard Chardonnay is a single-vineyard Chardonnay from the Yarra Valley in Victoria, Australia. The vineyard is located in a protected valley, which gives it a cooler microclimate than neighboring sites. The grapes are planted on a southerly facing slope, which helps to ripen them slowly and evenly. The wine is made in a traditional style, with whole-bunch pressing and barrel fermentation. The barrels are a mix of French oak, with 25% new. The wine is aged for 12 months in barrel before being bottled. The wine has a pale straw color with green hues. The nose is expressive with aromas of pink grapefruit, orange blossom, and coriander seeds. The palate is gently textured, saline, and structured, with flavors of citrus, white peach, and almond. The wine finishes zesty and long.e peach, and almond. The wine finishes zesty and long.

Critic Scores

Planted on a cool, south-facing slope on what is one of Giant Step's warmest sites. 30% mlf, 30% new oak. There's a gentle creaminess on the nose combined with white peach and grilled hazelnuts. Less opulent than the '24 without forgoing this wine's usual texture and mouthfeel. Delicious straight out of the gate but structured enough to cellar for at least the next four to six years.

Tarraford is the lowest and theoretically the warmest of Giant Steps single vineyard sites. But it’s a south-facing vineyard, which keeps it cool.
This is Tarraford in fine form. It has an inherent and up-front generosity but it’s oh so stylish from the mid-palate onwards. This is not a flamboyant wine but it’s something of a masterclass. It tastes of grapefruit, nectarine, pears, cedar and salted almonds, and from start to finish it oozes class. The length of the finish is exquisite.

Vineyard Cultivation

The Tarraford Vineyard represents another cornerstone of Giant Steps' single-vineyard expression strategy within Yarra Valley. This site benefits from the region's distinctive cool-climate maritime influence, where sea breezes moderate temperatures and extend the growing season, building complexity in Chardonnay. The 2024 vintage saw typical Yarra Valley conditions: cool nights and moderate days that favoured slow ripening and acidity preservation. Alluvial soils in this section of the valley provide excellent mineral character and drainage, essential for the refined, elegant profile associated with this vineyard site.

Vinification

Hand-harvesting preserved fruit integrity, followed by careful whole-bunch pressing to achieve optimal juice quality. Fermentation in French oak imparted subtle structure whilst maintaining varietal purity. The winemaking approach emphasises malolactic development under cool conditions, preventing aggressive acidic reduction and preserving the wine's fresh character. Extended lees contact built complexity through gradual autolysis, whilst minimal disturbance protected delicate aromas.
