Tasting Notes

Patrick Piuze Chablis Vaillon Les Minots Premier Cru 2022 is an expressive Burgundy Chardonnay from one of the warmest and sunniest parcels in the Vaillons valley. The south-facing Les Minots site encourages an early harvest and gives this Premier Cru Chablis a richer, more opulent profile, balanced by the classic mineral freshness and precision associated with the appellation.

Crafted from 70-year-old Chardonnay vines, this distinctive Chablis Premier Cru combines generous fruit character with elegant structure and vibrant energy. Expect an exotic, layered expression shaped by the warm microclimate, while the region’s renowned limestone soils bring freshness, finesse and a refined mineral finish.

Patrick Piuze brings an international perspective to his Burgundian winemaking, having worked at wineries across Australia, South Africa and Israel before establishing his reputation in Chablis. This 2022 bottling showcases his talent for translating individual vineyard sites into complex, terroir-driven wines with remarkable clarity.

Critic Scores

Aromas of pear, honeycomb and dried white flowers introduce Piuze's 2022 Chablis 1er Cru Vaillons Les Minots, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming wine that's seamless and enveloping, offering considerable early appeal. Quebecois Patrick Piuze, who established his eponymous maison in Chablis after stints working with Jean-Marie Guffens and Brocard, has produced a fine set of 2022s. These are some of the richer, more textural wines that I've tasted at this address, despite Piuze being a comparatively early harvester. Readers will remember the rudiments of Piuze's approach: hand-harvested grapes are pressed firmly in old Vaslin presses, their juice fermented in used barrels and stainless steel, with sur lie élevage of comparatively short duration, because Piuze wishes to capture the maximum of freshness and energy by early bottling. The resulting wines are elegantly textural but incisive, clearly differentiated by site. This is also the best address to explore the village-level Chablis AOC, as Piuze produces a number of cuvées and lieu-dit bottlings designed to highlight the diversity that this large appellation encompasses. (WK)

The 2022 Chablis Vaillons 1er Cru Les Minots has a lovely bouquet with orange blossom, Golden Delicious and light saffron aromas. The palate is well-balanced with a slightly honeyed opening, a little more exotic in style, yet it retains the essence of Chablis. There’s a very slight reduction that plays to its advantage on the finish. Highly recommended. (NM)

Minots is another spelling for the climat Mélinots which was originally known as Les Minos; it is generally considered to be the warmest of all of the climats within Vaillons yet curiously the wines always seem to retain good acidity A discreet though not imperceptible application of wood sets off pretty floral and white pepper wisps that add breadth to the aromas of citrus confit, pear and ocean spray. The caressing and concentrated but markedly punchy medium-bodied flavors also flash good power on the stony finale, indeed this is like rolling a pebble around in the mouth. While this could use better depth, the potential seems to be present and this is also recommended provided you intend to cellar it.

Chardonnay

A versatile white grape grown worldwide, ranging in style from lean and mineral to rich and oak-aged.

Burgundy

Burgundy is undoubtedly the home of the finest Pinot Noir and Chardonnays in the world, where vineyards, or Domaines have been producing wines for over 2000 years. Burgundy is located in the North-east of France, an hours drive from Lyon and 2 hours from Paris. With over 100 appellations, or sub-regions (more than any other wine region) Burgundy is known for being the most terroir-oriented region in the World. The finest red wines of Burgundy are found in the Côte d'Or, a string of villages including Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey St Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vougeot, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St Georges.

There are flavours present in great Burgundys that are the envy of Pinot Noir producers worldwide. The elusive peacocks tail finish that goes on and on, and the pretty-elegance backed by Burgundy muscle is the goal of winemakers around the globe. The main levels in the Burgundy classifications, in descending order of quality, are: Grand crus, Premier crus, village appellations, and finally regional appellations. For the Chablis wines, a similar hierarchy of Grand Cru, Premier Cru and Village wines is used, plus Petit Chablis as a level below Village Chablis.
