Tasting Notes

The Truscott Block is situated at 550m above sea level in the Piccadilly sub-region of the Adelaide Hills and in the hands of Matt Marge, ex-senior winemaker at Shaw + Smith, Tolpuddle Vineyard and MMAD Wines, it crafts benchmark Adelaide Hills Chardonnay.  

What makes this wine so remarkable is its mix of raw power and subtlety with a strong nod towards Meursault. It is a vibrant style with a pristine and beautifully composed core of grapefruit and peachskin aromas lined with a rich base of French oak. Zesty acidity drives refined flavours before building to a strong finish. This is a winery to watch, very closely.

The Truscott Block is at 500m asl in the Piccadilly sub-region of the Adelaide Hills. Average vine age is 30+ years.

Emphatically good chardonnay. Cedar-smoke, brine. flint and fennel characters are built around a confident core of peach, nectarine. cooked apple and lemon curd flavours. It’s juicy, fleshy and generous but neat and zippy at the same time. It has excellent persistence. There’s a smoked hay/bran character roundabouts. It’s complex, delicious, long-flavoured and more.

From vines planted to soils of silty loam over deep clay, sandstone and quartz in Piccadilly, at 550m. Whole-bunch pressed and matured in large format French oak (25% new), on lees for 10 months, full mlf. Flinty struck-match notes engage the senses at once, with white peach, grapefruit pith and citrus zest. The palate opens with roundness, a panna cotta softness with lime zest, honeysuckle and riverstone scattered throughout. This has a prettiness to its profile and generosity of length.

Vineyard Cultivation

The Truscott block is located on an undulating slope located at 550m above sea level that is generally E-NE in aspect and consists of silty loam over deep clays, with sandstone and quartz peppered throughout. It features a mix of Chardonnay clones with an average age of 30+ years. The high altitude means the block was harvested four weeks later than the Magpie Block, and the fruit exhibits the classic weight, acid and power of the Piccadilly Valley.

Vinification

The fruit was whole-bunch pressed and racked to French oak hogsheads (25% new) with full solids. The wines underwent malolactic fermentation and remained on lees for 10 months before blending and bottling.

Winemaker / Proprietor

Matt Large is one of the most technically accomplished of the new generation of Australian winemakers, with a career spanning some of the country's most respected cool-climate vineyards. After early experience at Shadowfax in Victoria's Macedon Ranges and working vintages in Piedmont, Italy, Large joined The Other Wine Co. before becoming Senior Winemaker at Shaw + Smith and working across Tolpuddle Vineyard. His Adelaide Hills work is defined by precision, restraint and an emphasis on site expression, particularly with Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and increasingly Nebbiolo. His fascination with the latter began with a 2017 vintage in Barolo and ultimately led to the creation of Praeter in 2018. In late 2024, Large left Shaw + Smith to concentrate on Praeter full-time, farming vineyards himself and producing wines from the Adelaide Hills, Victoria's Pyrenees and Italy's Langhe. His wines reflect a distinctive combination of Australian fruit purity, European influence and meticulous vineyard focus.
