Vibrant, bright, aromatic and complex.

While it it is labelled Frère Cadet (younger brother) it is by no means a second wine.

      Comments from Winemaker Keppell Smith:

Frère Cadet is made identically as the Estate chardonnay. The same care attention to old world traditions. Unrushed, allowing nature to do the work at her own pace.

The only difference is the vineyard, run by some talented vignerons, located a few kilometers from Savaterre in the Beechworth region.

      2024 Tasting Notes

This is a finer more defined 'Frère Cadet'. On the nose lifted floral notes of lime blossom and gardenia combine with aromas of white nectarine, grapefruit, grilled nuts, praline, brioche, cinnamon, cardamon and flint.

The palate is a delight. Purer enjoyment. Mouth filling juicy minerality. Amazing structure. Such length and precision. Just the right amount of “grip” on the finish.

This wine makes you salivate with anticipation of the next sip.

The flavours and texture go on and on with glimpses of pear, white peach/nectarine, pink grapefruit. I won’t go on but you get the idea.

Precise, textured and powerful with a beautiful spine of acidity to frame this delightful experience. I consider this version the best 'Frère Cadet' yet.

While it it is labelled Frère Cadet (younger brother) it is by no means a second wine.

Only one from a different Terroir.

    Savaterre Wines

Tucked away amidst the majestic mountains of northeastern Victoria, just on the outskirts of the charming town of Beechworth, lies the Savaterre vineyard.

In 1996, Keppell Smith, the proprietor and winemaker, stumbled upon this hidden gem after an extensive exploration of Australia's premier wine regions. The unique blend of mild summer days, high-altitude cool climate, and the undulating foothills of the Victorian Alps presented the perfect "terroir" that Keppell had been searching for.

With an unwavering dedication to crafting exceptional, distinctive wines that stand apart from the crowd, Keppell draws inspiration heavily from the traditions of Old World winemaking. From meticulously selecting vineyard sites to embracing natural yeasts and employing the finest French oak barrels, he seamlessly marries the art and science of winemaking in his relentless pursuit of excellence.

Beyond its vineyards, the region boasts breathtaking vistas, an abundance of local delicacies, exquisite dining experiences, and the rich history of Beechworth. As its wine scene continues to flourish, the area has garnered recognition as an independent wine region, adding to its allure as a destination for wine enthusiasts and connoisseurs alike.
