Te Mata Elston Chardonnay 2024
Tasting Notes
The 2024 vintage delivers power without heaviness, polish without gloss. The aromatics open with white peach, lemon curd and sliced apple, edged by crushed stone and a faint aniseed lift. There’s real intent here. Not just ripe fruit, but shape and tension.
On the palate it’s full and authoritative, yet controlled. Barrel fermentation brings a creamy, nut-laden texture, hazelnut, almond meal, oatmeal, but the fruit stays front and centre. Citrus acidity cuts cleanly through the richness, giving the wine drive and clarity, while subtle phenolics and a gentle grainy grip keep everything honest. Nothing flabby, nothing showy. Just precision.
The finish is long, savoury and saline, with lemon zest and a quiet mineral echo that reminds you this is serious Chardonnay, built to age, not to shout.
This is Elston doing what Elston does best: muscular, structured, and unapologetically premium. A confident follow-up to the superb 2023 and a clear signal that 2024 is a vintage worth paying attention to.
