Tasting Notes

The 42 Degrees South Pinot Noir is a wine from Frogmore Creek, known for its bright ruby-red appearance with garnet hues. It features aromas of fresh cherry and red berry, with delicate floral notes, and a palate that offers a harmonious balance of red fruit flavors, smooth tannins, and good acidity. The wine is made from hand-harvested grapes grown in the Coal River Valley in Southern Tasmania, and it pairs well with dishes like roasted duck breast or mushroom risotto.

Vineyard Cultivation

42 Degrees South is the approachable, fruit-driven range of Frogmore Creek, an established Tasmanian producer, the name marking the central latitude of the island. The Pinot Noir is drawn from estate-grown fruit in the pristine cool climate of southern Tasmania, principally around the Coal River Valley where Frogmore Creek farms its vineyards. The region's cool maritime conditions, long ripening season and low disease pressure suit Pinot Noir, giving bright, red-fruited wines with natural acidity. Frogmore Creek manages its vineyards with a sustainability focus. As a non-vintage or multi-vintage styled release, the wine is built to a consistent house profile from estate parcels rather than expressing a single season, prioritising freshness and drinkability.

Vinification

Fruit is harvested from the estate's southern Tasmanian vineyards and vinified to preserve the bright, primary red-fruit character that defines the 42 Degrees South style. The Pinot Noir is fermented in a straightforward, fruit-forward manner with gentle extraction to keep tannins supple and the palate generous rather than structural. Maturation is kept restrained, with only modest oak influence so that cherry and red-berry fruit and the region's zesty acidity remain to the fore. The approach favours early accessibility, delivering a soft, rounded and generously textured wine with a long, fresh finish. As an entry-tier bottling it is made for immediate enjoyment rather than extended cellaring.
