Tasting Notes

Red cherry, raspberry, and perfume spice. Fruit forward in the mouth with supple fine tannins. This Pinot sings of bright red fruits with hints of spice and earth. Smooth tannins create an enjoyable drinking experience. Made from multiple blocks and clones, it was fermented with wild yeasts and minimal use of French oak to preserve freshness.

Critic Scores

Hand picked from a single block of 777 from the Napoleone vineyard. Some whole bunches. A light, bright garnet. An instantly appealing bouquet of fresh summer berries, a little briar, white pepper and light rose petal scents. This delivers on the light- to medium-bodied palate, too. Bright, crunchy tannins round out a very well-priced wine that'll be even better 6–12 months from now. - Philip Rich - Published 17 February 2025

Vineyard Cultivation

Airlie Bank is the second label of Punt Road, the Napoleone family's Yarra Valley winery at Coldstream, drawing on estate fruit from the Napoleone vineyard. The 2024 was hand-picked from a single block of the 777 clone on the Napoleone vineyard, a selection prized for its perfume and bright red-fruit character. The vineyard sits on grey loam over clay in the cool lower Yarra Valley, farmed sustainably for clean, balanced fruit in the affordable, early-drinking Airlie Bank style. The 2024 Yarra season was moderate and even, yielding light, bright and finely perfumed Pinot Noir with fresh summer-berry fruit, briar and white-pepper spice - a well-priced wine reviewers rate among the best value Pinots in the country.

Vinification

The 2024 was hand-picked and fermented with wild yeasts and some whole bunches, made from multiple blocks and clones led by the 777 selection. Fermentation ran in open vessels with gentle handling to preserve fresh red-fruit aromatics, fine tannin and drinkability. In keeping with the house style, oak use was minimal - only a light touch of French oak - to keep the wine bright, crunchy and fruit-focused rather than structural. After a short elevage the wine was bottled early to capture its light- to medium-bodied, fragrant profile, and reviewers note it will show even better six to twelve months on from release.
