"The Crozes-Hermitage remain the benchmarks for the appellation.” La Revue du Vin de France.

"For many wine lovers this is the touchstone producer of Crozes-Hermitage.” Josh Raynolds, Vinous

With vines aged between 40 and 50 years on average, the Graillot terroirs are firing on all cylinders. Organically managed, gnarled and meticulously manicured vines.

Tasting Notes

The organically farmed grapes were loaded (crushed without destemming) into lined concrete vats for a two- to five-day pre-ferment maceration. After natural fermentation, the wine was aged in used François Frères barriques (between one and seven years old) purchased from some of the finest estates in Burgundy. Since the 2011 vintage, 20-hectolitre Stockinger ovals have also begun to play a quiet yet growing role.

The notes below point to what a successful wine this is: the cream always rises to the top! It’s already bursting with charismatic plum, anise and rose petal flavours and a twist of nettle from the stems. The palate is refined, juicy, super-fresh and seriously complex. A joy to drink, it will continue to improve for a decade or two, even if it is lovely drinking now. A great restaurant vintage, if ever there was one!

Critic Scores

A very pure and floral nose with cherries, violets and plums as well. Medium body with velvety tannins and bright acidity. Such a succulent core of redcurrants and violets with minerality and a transparent character to the focused finish. Drink or hold.

Vineyard Cultivation

Alain Graillot stands among Crozes-Hermitage's most respected growers, operating since the 1980s with a commitment to low-intervention viticulture. His vineyard holdings span parcels across the appellation's diverse terroirs, with significant holdings on the clay-limestone hillside soils and south-facing exposures that define the best Crozes sites. The vines, many reaching maturity, are managed organically since 2000, with minimal chemical inputs and emphasis on soil health and natural balance. The 2021 vintage in the Rhône saw moderate ripening conditions: cool spring delayed budbreak, but warm summer and dry harvest period allowed full phenolic maturation. Syrah in Crozes achieved full concentration with bright acidity intact—ideal for Graillot's elegant house style.

Vinification

Graillot's practice has long favoured whole-bunch fermentation with natural yeasts, typically 50–80% of stems retained to enhance complexity and structure. Fermentation in temperature-controlled open vats proceeded over three weeks, with regular foot-treadings and gentle extraction. Following fermentation, the wine rested on its skins for a further week or two before pressing, building silky tannin texture. Élevage took place in a mix of neutral and one-year-old French oak (approximately 20–30% new wood) over 18 months, permitting slow development and natural clarification. Bottling without fining or filtration preserved the wine's aromatic character and micro-oxygenation potential.
