Crafted from carefully selected grapes, this limited release Syrah offers a refined balance of rich fruit character and elegant structure.

This vintage distinguished itself by securing the Best Shiraz trophy at the ANZ Boutique Wine Show 2019, a testament to its superior quality and craftsmanship. Each bottle in this limited release is individually numbered, emphasizing its exclusivity and collectible appeal. The 2018 growing season in Yarra Valley was marked by favorable conditions that allowed Syrah grapes to develop vibrant flavors and refined tannins, resulting in a wine that is both expressive and age-worthy.

Expect a complex bouquet of dark berries, subtle spice, and earthy nuances, complemented by a supple palate and a lingering finish. This Syrah reflects the cool climate characteristics of Yarra Valley with a perfect harmony of intensity and finesse, making it a standout example of premium Australian Shiraz.

Whether enjoyed now or cellared for future enjoyment, the Allinda Yarra Valley Limited Release Syrah 2018 is a remarkable wine for collectors and connoisseurs seeking a high-quality, award-winning Shiraz that embodies the unique essence of its region.

Critic Scores

A bright, elegant, complex wine with subtle spiciness and driven by its fruit - oak is very much understated. Vibrant palate, beautifully balanced and lovely to drink young, although it will surely age well. (20% whole-bunch; aged 10 months in seasoned oak barriques, French and American. Trophy, best shiraz, 2019 Boutique Wine Show.)

Richly fruited and seductive, the fragrant bouquet shows dark berry, cured meat, fennel, pressed flower, and toasted almond characters. It's equally satisfying in the mouth, delivering excellent weight, a fleshy texture, and refreshing acidity, wonderfully framed by fine tannins. Gorgeously maturing with complexity and refinement.

Always good to see wines which have the benefit of a few years ageing by the winery before release (if you are wondering about this, consider that this Yarra Valley Shiraz, or Syrah in this case as they prefer to name it, has been given the same period of cellar ageing as the current release of Grange, which comes with a price tag 25 times that of this wine). Deep maroon/purple in colour, this is very much of the savoury style. Notes of cassis, leather, cloves, dark berries, animal skins, dry herbs and a hint of chocolate. A seamless, mid-weight wine with gentle acidity and very good length. The fruit continues for the full journey with good persistence. This should drink well for another half dozen years.

Savoury-styled shiraz/syrah boasting texture, flavour and length. This is in a good place. Cherry-plum flavour with briar, peppercorn and smoked meat inflections. 20% whole bunches have added a nutty, twiggy element but the fruit continues to sweep confidently through. Now or later.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Allinda is a small, family-run Yarra Valley winery at Dixons Creek, founded by winemaker Al Fencaros and known for understated, cool-climate reds. The Limited Release Syrah is a single-variety Shiraz, labelled Syrah to signal its cooler, more savoury and spicy style, with each bottle individually numbered. Fruit is grown on Yarra Valley clay and loam soils, where the cool climate yields Shiraz with bright acidity, fine tannin and aromatic lift rather than weight. The 2018 Yarra vintage was warm and reliable with good ripening conditions, producing balanced, richly fruited grapes that gave a wine which won the Best Shiraz trophy at the 2019 ANZ Boutique Wine Show and out-performed wines several times its price.

Vinification

The Syrah is made with around 20 per cent whole-bunch inclusion, adding perfume, spice and a fine tannin frame, with the balance destemmed. After fermentation and pressing, the wine is matured for about ten months in seasoned oak barriques, both French and American, so that wood stays well understated and the fruit and savoury, cured-meat and pressed-flower characters lead. Oak is deliberately restrained across the style, and the wine is given further bottle age at the winery before release. The aim is a bright, elegant, fruit-driven Shiraz with vibrant acidity, fleshy texture and fine framing tannin, drinkable young but capable of ageing.
