Tasting Notes

The Wood’s Paddock Vineyard, just east of Avoca, in Victoria's Pyrenees, is three acres of shiraz, twenty years’ old and farmed organically. The cool climate site has resulted in fragrant and layered expression of shiraz. It spent 12 months in oak followed by 3 months in tank, before bottling unfined, with a very light polishing filtration. "It has taken 5 years since the demise of Paradise IV for me to present the first wine that I can say is
superior to anything I have made.

Critic Scores

World class wine that simply shrieks a top-class site in the northern Rhone. Astonishing power of flavour, balance and elegance. A true fist in a velvet glove, it’s a real half-way stage between top-class pinot noir and shiraz. Does the variety really end up mattering? Its perfume defies belief for its heady, floral, musky and spicy perfume of black, blue and red flowers, exotic spices, cardamon and blood plums. Over time it has become more earthy and mineral, while its outstanding oak shines though. The palate glides with effortless style as its translucently pure core of vivacious but supremely restrained fruit wraps around the finest and firmest of dry, mineral tannins, finishing exceptionally long and savoury. Astonishing. A landmark wine. Unforgettable. Lord knows what it would cost if it came from the northern Rhone!

Deep colour with a little purple in the rim, the bouquet is meaty, smoky charcuterie, five-spice and white pepper rather than black, the palate firm and very peppery, showing lots of rotundone, while the tannins are firm and gritty with a trace of peppery bitterness, quite long and promising to reward cellaring.

Vineyard Cultivation

Woods Paddock is a single-vineyard Shiraz from Doug Neal's Altera Terra label, drawn from a cool, elevated site in the Pyrenees hinterland around Avoca in central Victoria. The vineyard sits on quartz-influenced, well-drained soils that suppress vigour and yield, producing small, concentrated berries with marked peppery rotundone character. Farming is low-intervention and hands-on, in keeping with a tiny-volume boutique operation. The 2022 growing season in the Pyrenees was cooler and slower to ripen than average, retaining natural acidity and preserving the aromatic, spice-driven, almost pinot-like profile that critics likened to a top northern Rhone site. Yields were modest, concentrating flavour in the fruit.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-picked and fermented in small open batches, with gentle handling aimed at perfume and fine, savoury tannin rather than power. Whole-bunch or partial stem inclusion is consistent with the wine's pronounced white-pepper, five-spice and floral rotundone character, though the exact proportion is unconfirmed. The wine went through malolactic fermentation and was matured in French oak, described by critics as outstanding and well integrated, leaving a translucent, mineral core wrapped in firm, dry tannin. Alcohol is around 13.5%. Production is very small. The style is deliberately restrained and structured, built for long cellaring.
