Critic Scores

Deepish brick-red colour, with a touch of dark chocolate in the complex, robust bouquet which also holds notes of ironstony earth, ferrous touches and more, the palate very full-bodied and powerful, loaded with firm tannins and tight packed density. Long, long carry. A most impressive wine.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Ascheri's Barolo vineyard sits on the south-facing Pisapola cru in Monforte d'Alba, benefiting from excellent sun exposure and natural drainage through Piedmont's distinctive clay-limestone soils. This small family estate, established in 1978 by owner-winemaker Matteo Ascheri, maintains traditional low-yield viticulture aimed at concentrating flavour and complexity throughout the vineyard blocks. The 2013 vintage in Piedmont saw warm, dry growing conditions that generated ripe, phenolically mature Nebbiolo fruit, delivering optimal structure and ageing potential for this elegant Barolo expression.

Vinification

Pisapola 2013 grapes underwent traditional fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks with native yeasts, promoting complex tannin extraction and natural aromatic development throughout fermentation. Malolactic conversion proceeded naturally without addition, followed by approximately 18 months' French oak ageing split between new and previously used barrels. Oak maturation allowed the wine's structure to develop and integrate whilst preserving Nebbiolo's signature elegance and freshness. Regular tasting notes guided cellar management decisions. Unfiltered and unfined bottling maintained the wine's natural mineral character and organic complexity throughout.
