Tasting Notes

This Crimson Pinot Noir has a fragrant nose of dried roses and hay. Fresh thyme and rosemary with spice notes of black cardamom, cinnamon and warm cedar. The palate is wonderfully open and calm, with red fruits gliding through to the finish. This wine is engaging and alluring now and will age gracefully.

"20 years ago we named this special Pinot Noir “Crimson” in support of Project Crimson, the charitable trust working to replant and preserve native red-flowering pōhutukawa and rātā trees throughout New Zealand. Ata Rangi founder Clive Paton has planted more than 75,000 trees at the Ata Rangi family’s Bush Block. We continue to support conservation efforts across our region. Crimson Pinot Noir celebrates our commitment to remain in service to the land and to the ecosystem that sustains us."

Critic Scores

The 2024 vintage: arguably the best in 45 years we have
been growing grapes”, say Ata Rangi.
Well, it’s a terrific release of this wine. It has perfume, spice,
a slight wet earthy bass, raspberry and cherry. It’s mediumbodied, has some juiciness and dark red fruits, a slight
liquorice root thing, crisp ‘mineral’ acidity, a tight graphite and
slate feel to tannin, with a bright finish offering some blood
orange and spice. Gee, this has some energy and it drinks a
charm.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Ata Rangi was founded in 1980 by Clive Paton on the free-draining alluvial gravels of the Martinborough Terrace, at the southern end of New Zealand's Wairarapa. Crimson draws chiefly on younger estate vines and parcels declassified from the flagship, grown across shallow, stony soils over deep gravel that impose low vigour and small crops. Farming is sustainable and increasingly hands-off, with the Paton family running extensive native restoration through Project Crimson, after which the wine is named, having planted more than 75,000 trees on their Bush Block. Ata Rangi describe the 2024 growing season as arguably their finest in 45 years of growing grapes, a warm, even ripening year giving fragrant, well-balanced fruit.

Vinification

Fruit was hand-picked and largely destemmed, with a portion of whole bunches retained for aromatic lift, then given a short cold soak before wild fermentation in open vessels. Cap management was gentle, favouring hand plunging to keep tannins fine, and the wine was pressed at a light-to-moderate extraction. Malolactic fermentation ran through the following spring in barrel. Crimson is a deliberately approachable, earlier-drinking expression, matured for a shorter period in French oak with only a small proportion new, so that perfume, red-cherry fruit and crisp acidity remain to the fore rather than oak character.
