The Ata Rangi flagship Pinot Noir comes from the winery's oldest plantings on the Martinborough Terrace, first established by Clive Paton in 1980 on free-draining alluvial gravels. The wine is built around the estate's signature Abel clone, complemented by other selections, and farmed sustainably at low yields by the Paton family. The 2022 growing season in Martinborough was cooler and more marginal than recent warm years, with growers managing rain pressure through careful canopy work and selective picking; the district's free-draining terrace sites came through well, yielding mid-weight, finely detailed fruit with bright acidity and savoury complexity rather than overt power.

Fruit was hand-picked, mostly destemmed with a whole-bunch portion retained for perfume and grip, then cold-soaked and wild-fermented in open fermenters. Cap work was gentle, by hand, to preserve fine, sleek tannin. After pressing, the wine matured in French oak barriques with a proportion new, completing malolactic fermentation in barrel and resting on lees for around eighteen months. The élevage aims for clarity and precision, allowing the vintage's air-dried strawberry, spice and earthy-savoury tones and finely etched acidity to show, in an elegant, age-worthy style bottled for the long term.
