Tasting Notes

Bannockburn’s Chardonnay has a track record most Victorian producers would give their eye teeth for. The quality and style can be traced back to the estate’s exceptional organically farmed sites. Olive Tree Hill Vineyard was planted in 1976 and abuts the S.R.H. parcel, while Winery Block was planted in 1981. Both lie on volcanic soils over limestone clays with an average vine age of around 35 years. This year’s estate Chardonnay also includes fruit from Stuart Block (1997), the close-planted Grigsby (2007) and Kelly Lane Vineyard (2016). The clonal mix comprises P58 and Bernard 76, 95 and 96. Vine spacings and planting densities vary across the sites.

The fruit was pressed as whole bunches and fermented naturally in a mixture of French hogsheads and puncheons (25% new). This year, 100% of the blend went through malolactic fermentation, and the wine spent 10 months maturing on lees with no stirring. Our expectations are always high for this release; each year, the Bannockburn team manages to exceed those expectations. This is a striking Chardonnay. It’s fleshy with stone fruits and citrus underpinned by chalk, flint and nutty/doughy richness. A pure, vivid Bannockburn with saturating presence, piercing acid cut and a precise, lengthy finish.

Critic Scores

There are yellow stone fruits characters here, and an array of sweet spice notes, but it’s the flesh, the rush and the juice of grapefruit and ripe pear flavours that both dominate and seduce. This wine really does make you dive quickly in for more. There’s a subtle smokiness, some tonic and mineral-like notes, and an especially noticeable (extra) linger to the finish. This is one of those wines where the acidity itself feels flushed with flavour. The aftertaste then adds some pebble-stone characters, just because it can. What a wine.

Vineyard Cultivation

Bannockburn Vineyards is a benchmark Geelong estate with a long Chardonnay pedigree, farming organically managed sites near Bannockburn in Victoria. The estate Chardonnay is anchored by the Olive Tree Hill Vineyard, planted in 1976 alongside the S.R.H. parcel, and the Winery Block planted in 1981, both on volcanic soils over limestone clays with an average vine age of around 35 years. The 2025 blend also draws on younger plantings, including Stuart Block (1997), the close-planted Grigsby (2007) and Kelly Lane (2016), across a clonal mix of P58 and Bernard 76, 95 and 96. Cool-climate Geelong conditions and low-vigour soils give tight, structured, mineral fruit.

Vinification

Fruit was pressed as whole bunches and fermented naturally, with wild yeast, in a mix of French hogsheads and puncheons of which about 25% were new. The wine underwent full malolactic fermentation and spent around ten months maturing on lees without stirring, building doughy, nutty richness while preserving cutting acidity. The result is a fleshy yet vivid Chardonnay with stone fruit, citrus, chalk and flint, saturating mid-palate presence and a precise, lengthy, mineral finish. Alcohol is around 13.5%. The hands-off, natural-ferment approach and restrained new oak are consistent with Bannockburn's textural, terroir-driven house style.
