Scarce and site-driven – Just 1.78 acres of certified organic Pinot from a high-density, experimental block adjacent to Serré

Edgy and complex – A lifted, savoury Pinot with red berries, bramble

Refined structure – 100% destemmed, wild ferment, 25% new oak; lighter than Serré but with depth and intent.

Tasting Notes

De La Terre, named in reference to our ethos ‘of the earth’, was planted in 2007 and certified organic in 2021. Made up of two blocks, this vineyard is a high-density planting adjacent to Serré, but explores variables of exposition, orientation, and clonal makeup.

De La Terre Pinot Noir is made from a 1.78-acre vineyard block, planted in 2007. The clone is predominantly 777 but includes a portion of 114. The vine spacing is 1m and the row spacing is 1.2m (8,333 vines/hectare), and the block is made up of two sections: the top flat section, which has north-south row orientation, and the east slope, which has an east-west orientation. The soils are dark clay over weathered basalt and limestone.

The fruit was handpicked, completely destemmed, and fermented on skins for 10 days before pressing to French oak hogshead barrels, 25% of which were new. The wine was left undisturbed, went through malolactic fermentation in spring, and was blended and bottled in February.

De La Terre is lifted and savoury, showing bramble, red berries, and garrigue on the nose. The palate carries through with cherry cola, spice and a ferrous edge—lighter and finer in structure than Serré, but with serious intent and complex savoury tones. A detailed and earthy Pinot Noir that sits on the edgier side of our estate’s stylistic spectrum.
Though penned in 2012, James Halliday’s “reminiscent of a young DRC,” remark remains a ringing endorsement for this close-planted site. After its brief hiatus, the 2022 serves as a wonderful reminder of the heights this site can scale. The fruit fermented with 100% whole bunches for 10 days before the juice was removed from its stems. The wine then matured in hogsheads (25% new). Savoury and pretty, it’s a seamless and complex release with satiny texture and lingering presence.

Critic Scores

Cardamon, red cherry, tamarind, blood orange, dill and a drape of Indian spice across the mid-palate. Sure, the whole-bunch piquancy is evident, but the integration of extract, optimal fruit ripeness and bunch is rewarding and ultimately delicious after some some air, boding well for mid-term aging. So fragrant, unusual and exotic of appeal. Gently mid-weighted. The finish, a long succulent weld with rivets of green. Drink or hold.

Vineyard Cultivation

De La Terre, meaning 'of the earth', is a scarce single-block Pinot Noir from Bannockburn Vineyards near Geelong, Victoria. Planted in 2007 on just 1.78 acres adjacent to the Serré block and certified organic in 2021, it is a high-density, experimental planting at roughly 8,333 vines per hectare (1 m vine and 1.2 m row spacing) that explores exposition, orientation and clone. The two sections — a flat, north-south-oriented top and an east-facing slope — sit on dark clay over weathered basalt and limestone. The clonal mix is predominantly 777 with a portion of 114. The wine is farmed organically and made to express this specific, cool-climate Moorabool Valley site.

Vinification

The fruit was hand-picked and completely destemmed, then fermented on skins for around ten days before pressing to French oak hogsheads, 25% of them new. The wine was left undisturbed in barrel, moved through malolactic fermentation in spring, and was blended and bottled the following February. This restrained, whole-berry handling and moderate new oak give a lifted, savoury Pinot lighter and finer in structure than the neighbouring Serré, showing bramble, red berries and garrigue with cherry cola, fine spice and a ferrous edge. It sits on the edgier, more detailed and earthy side of the estate's stylistic range.
