Critic Scores

Deep ruby to garnet with bold, bright red cherry to red plum and Campari aromas, laced with broken rock mineral nuances, the palate firm and tense with grip and serious intent, and took a while to open up and reveal its wonderful display of fruit. Firm and somewhat shy at first pour, with oak still evident, it has great depth and should reveal even more if given time. Pour it into as big-bowl glass.

Vineyard Cultivation

Bass Phillip, founded by Phillip Jones in 1979 at Leongatha in South Gippsland, is one of Australia's most celebrated Pinot Noir estates. Since 2020 it has been owned by Burgundy vigneron Jean-Marie Fourrier, who has continued the low-yielding, close-planted estate vineyards on free-draining loam over clay in this cool, maritime pocket. The Premium is a selection of the finest estate barrels. The 2024 Gippsland season yielded fruit of medium to deep colour and real intensity, giving smoky dark-cherry aromatics and a firm, tightly structured palate with fine tannin and persistent, silky texture built for cellaring.

Vinification

Bunches are sorted on a table, then passed through an incline destemmer sending whole berries to open fermenters with minimal sulphur. A natural ferment begins within a few days, with hand-plunging until pressing at ten to fourteen days; the pressings are combined with free-run, settled, then gravity-racked to barrel. Malolactic fermentation occurs naturally in barrel. The Premium selection was matured for fourteen months in tight-grain, light-toast French oak barriques, of which 36% were new for this release, before gravity decanting off lees. Barrels are topped and monitored throughout.
