Critic Scores

Even bigger, richer and darker than the 2015, the 2016 Anaperenna Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon is 84% Shiraz and 16% Cabernet. These are not wines for fans of shy, delicate wines, but neither are they clumsy fruit bombs. This is pleasantly multifaceted, with complex notes ranging from charred beef, black olive and asphalt to blackberries and cassis, all underscored by loam, vanilla and cedar. Full-bodied (15.5% alcohol), it's hugely ripe but balanced, with supple tannins and enough acidity on the long, velvety finish to balance the ledger.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

The 2016 Anaperenna vintage benefited from Barossa Valley's mature vineyard infrastructure and Ben Glaetzer's refined viticulture practices. Shiraz and Cabernet parcels were selected for their expression of place: ripe fruit balanced by natural acidity, avoiding over-ripeness or extraction. Glaetzer's approach to harvesting—timed within precise two–three-day windows—ensured optimal phenolic and sugar maturity. The vintage presented classic warm-season conditions that allowed both varieties to develop full complexity whilst retaining the savoury character that distinguishes Glaetzer's house style from broader Barossa conventions.

Vinification

Anaperenna 2016 was produced using temperature-controlled fermentation techniques managing colour extraction and tannin development without heat stress. Fermentation was followed by extended maceration and malolactic conversion. The Shiraz and Cabernet components were matured separately in a careful oak selection—predominantly French and American—chosen for structural integration rather than flavour dominance. Blending was performed with precision to balance varietal characters. The finished wine was bottled at naturally achieved alcohol, ready for medium-term cellaring.

About this Wine

Shiraz Blend

A red wine blend built around Shiraz, often combined with varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon or Grenache.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
