Tasting Notes

This vintage has seen the Pyrette really hit its stride (quickened, elevated steps?). The fruit is sourced, as usual, from the Colbinabbin vineyard (starting in 2001) and the Col Mountain vineyard (starting in 2014). It is made in a similar way to the Pinot Noirs, with the exception of seeing around 20% whole bunch inclusion in the fermentations (rather than zero or close to zero for the Pinots). The 2022 is very complex with beautiful aromas; mulberry, red and dark plum, spice and graphite. The medium weight palate has flair and is intense with the fruit power driving a structured and firm finish. These wines certainly improve with eight years cellaring and drink for many years after that but can also be enjoyed for their medium weight and harmony right now.

Critic Scores

An exuberant, dark red-purple; a powerful wine with charry oak dominating in this youthful stage, but underneath, a core of dark fruit spiced to the max, infused with cedar and a more exotic sandalwood note. Full bodied, with ripe, powerful tannins and some charcuterie-like reduction, appealing but clips the finish. Give this more time in the cellar to amalgamate.

Vineyard Cultivation

Pyrette is Bindi's Heathcote Shiraz, sourced from a carefully sited, well-managed vineyard near Colbinabbin on the Mount Camel Range, with fruit historically drawn from the Colbinabbin vineyard (from 2001) and the Col Mountain vineyard (from 2014). Heathcote's calcareous red Cambrian soils over the range give Shiraz depth of colour and fine tannin while retaining freshness at these elevations. Production sits around 800 dozen. The 2023 season across central Victoria was cooler and later than the run of warm years, favouring medium-weight, aromatic reds, though precise site notes for this vintage are flagged NEEDS VERIFICATION.

Vinification

Pyrette is made much like Bindi's Pinot Noir, the key difference being roughly 20% whole-bunch inclusion in fermentation rather than the near-zero used for the Pinots. Fruit is fermented with indigenous yeast and handled gently, with the aim of harmony and drinkability over extraction, then matured in French oak. The house style is built to age gracefully over eight years and beyond while remaining approachable young. Exact oak regime and time in barrel for 2023 are not confirmed here and are flagged NEEDS VERIFICATION.
