Tasting Notes

Premium Langhorne Creek Shiraz grapes were selected and blended to produce this richly flavoured Sparkling wine.

It begins with fresh cherry and plum flavours before the older component of the blend adds complex spice and chocolate character. It has layers of flavour and is well structured with some dry, supple tannins supporting the up-front fruit.

Critic Scores

Includes 'a little splash of malbec'; gold medal winner National Wine Show of Australia ’21. The base wines came from the 1997–2022 vintages. Has threaded the needle with lower dosages than usual (hence the gold medal), investing the wine with freshness and finely wrought tannins. Is there nothing outside the skills of Paul Hotker? Not to mention, value for money across the board.

Goodness,. A bouquet of cracked pepper and plum pudding slides into a rich, glossy palate that's swimming with black satsuma plum and cracked pepper, amid a sea of very fine tannins. ... this wine is as well constructed as ever, and still represents the best value in sparkling red in the country. (WBM 100)

Deep red colour with the last vestiges of purple tint. Ripe plummy bouquet, clean and fresh, and not shrill or simplistic. A tinge of spice, earth and faint chocolate. The palate is full, and round, soft and smooth, balanced and clean on the finish with a touch of cleansing tannin. There's plenty of sweetness mid-palate, then a clean, drying finish. Cleverly balanced wine. This would have wide appeal.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Bleasdale Vineyards has grown Shiraz at Langhorne Creek in South Australia since 1850, making it one of the country's oldest continuously operating wineries. The region's deep alluvial soils, historically replenished by seasonal river flooding, and its maritime-cooled climate yield Shiraz of soft tannin and dark, ripe fruit, an ideal base for the Australian sparkling red tradition. Made as a non-vintage wine, it is assembled from Shiraz selected for depth of colour and generous plum and blackberry character rather than a single season's expression. Vineyards are managed for full ripeness while retaining freshness, giving the rich fruit needed to stand up to sparkling red's savoury, gently sweet finish.

Vinification

Made in the classic Australian sparkling-red idiom from Shiraz. Fruit is fermented on skins as a dry red base to build colour, tannin and dark-fruit concentration, with the option of oak maturation and reserve-wine blending to add spice and complexity across the non-vintage cuvee. The base wine then undergoes a secondary fermentation to create the sparkle, and is finished with a dosage that leaves the wine off-dry, balancing its savoury tannin. The result pairs a firm red-wine core with a lively mousse. Whether the second ferment is in bottle or tank, and the precise dosage, should be confirmed with the producer.

About this Wine

Bleasdale

Named after Reverend John Bleasdale, an anti-temperance South Australian priest, Bleasdale winery was founded by Frank Potts in 1950 and is one of the longest running family owned wineries in Australia. Originally intending for a life as a carpenter, Potts purchased, cleared and planted his first plots in Langhorne Creek in 1958, and soon expanded his holdings to include over 30 acres.

One of Bleasdale's claim-to-fame is Frank Potts' Basket Press, crafted from red gum trees. The press measures 15 meters in length, is 7 meters high and weighs over 3.5 tonnes. Winemakers Paul Hotker (also the viticulturist) and Matt Laube occasionally use the massive 120-year-old press for reserve wines. Although famed for their full-bodied Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, Bleasdale also produces an astounding array of blends and unusual varietals. The winemaker's skills don't just lie in red wine production, however, as they craft exquisitely refreshing white wines, sparkling and fortified.

South Australia

If you like Australian wine, then you probably like South Australia wine. The rich reds produced there put Australia on the wine-making map of the world. With over 40% of the countries vineyards, South Australia can rightfully call itself the wine state.

Wines are produced in several regions throughout the state, though many are naturally grouped together, like Barossa and Eden Valleys, only 15 minutes apart. They include such regions as Barossa Valley, Clare Valley, Eden Valley, Coonawarra, Adelaide Hills, Kangaroo Island, Langhorne Creek, The Limestone Coast, McLaren Vale and Wrattonbully to name but a few!

Barossa Valley boasts some of the oldest vines in Australia dating back to 1843 and produces some of the world's finest Shiraz, whilst the 'terra rossa' soils of Coonawarra is most suited to producing outstanding Cabernet Sauvignons. If you're a fan of Riesling, Clare Valley is a great place to explore and for a Maritime climate not dissimilar to parts of the Italian coastline, seek out the wines from McLaren Vale.
