Vineyard Cultivation

Bromley Wines is a small Geelong producer on Victoria's Bellarine Peninsula, run by Darren Burke, who came to wine after an earlier career as an intensive-care nurse in Australia and the UK before studying oenology at the University of Adelaide. He worked as a graduate winemaker at Orlando and then Alkoomi, fitting in a vintage in Chianti, before establishing his own label. The maritime Bellarine and wider Geelong district is a cool, wind-exposed region whose moderating bay influence suits Pinot Noir. The 2017 Victorian vintage was cool and long after a wet start, a season that produced fragrant, medium-bodied reds with bright acidity and fine tannin in the region's Pinot Noir.

Vinification

The fruit was handpicked and fermented to favour perfume and fine structure over weight, with gentle extraction giving plush but restrained fruit across the palate. Following fermentation and malolactic, the wine was matured in French oak, only a subtle, fragrant portion of it new, so the cedary spice supports rather than covers the raspberry and plum fruit. Careful tannin and acid management leads to a clean, fine finish. The style is even and approachable, with plush fruit up front and subtle fragrant oak at the back palate, made in a restrained, value-driven Geelong idiom rather than a heavily worked one.
