Tasting Notes

WINNER, GOURMET TRAVELLER WINEMAKER OF THE YEAR

A pitch perfect Farrside.  Darker spice notes and bright spicy fruit.  There’s real intensity on the nose, it’s vibrancy almost underplays the density of this wine.  The palate has smart oak integration and just sits in front of the cherry and tang of the fruit expression.  Great acidity gives the wine wonderful tension too.  There’s a tightly coiled nature to this wine, a feeling that it’s just holding form, waiting to open up down the track.  It’s bristling with savouriness and has layers of complexity.

Vineyard Cultivation

By Farr, founded by Gary Farr and now made by his son Nick, farms a run of single vineyards in the Moorabool Valley at Bannockburn in Geelong. The Farrside block was planted in 2001 on a north-east-facing slope where limestone is topped with black volcanic soil, its east-west rows protecting the fruit from excess sun. Clones 114, 115, 777, 667 and MV6 are grown here, and the cooler, darker site ripens later than the nearby Sangreal, yielding a firmer, more savoury wine. The 2022 vintage in Geelong was cooler and later under La Nina influence, favouring measured ripeness, bright acidity and detail over weight.

Vinification

Grapes were hand-harvested and fermented in open-top vessels with a portion of whole bunches. After a cold soak, fermentation ran on indigenous yeast with hand plunging, the cap worked gently before pressing at the close of ferment. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrel, and the wine was raised on lees in French oak, including some new wood, for about eighteen months. Careful oak integration sits behind the cherry-toned fruit, with firm acidity lending tension. Bottled with minimal handling and little fining or filtration, it shows the tightly coiled, layered character typical of the site.
