Vineyard Cultivation

Caduceus Cellars draws inspiration from founder Maynard James Keenan's family heritage in Northern Italy, where his great-grandfather made wine in the Piedmont region. The Marzo vineyard spans 2.5 acres on the banks of Oak Creek near Cornville, Arizona at 3,450 feet elevation. The distinctive terroir features sandy clay-loam river sediment overlaid on volcanic rock and calcareous formations, creating an alkaline growing environment. Vines are cropped at 2.0–2.5 tons per acre to concentrate character and complexity. The 2020 vintage benefited from Arizona's semi-arid climate, developing ripe Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon with balanced phenolic maturity.

Vinification

The 2020 Nagual del Marzo employs a classical Italian winemaking approach blending 50% Sangiovese, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Barbera. After harvest, the fruit undergoes submerged cap fermentation combined with extended maceration to extract colour, tannin and aromatic complexity from the skins. The resulting wine aged for 20 months in large Botte casks and traditional Italian wooden vessels, a gentle oak regimen that imparts subtle vanilla and spice while preserving the wine's elegant, restrained character. This technique honours Super Tuscan traditions adapted to Arizona's unique terroir.

About this Wine

Caduceus Cellars

Maynard James Keenan is a Pioneer in Arizona Winemaking and created the Caduceus Label for his Arizona Vineyard, Merkin Vineyards. One day, inbetween recording and touring for his award winning bands Tool, A Perfect Circle & Puscifer, he looked out from his patio and realised that the climate, soil and terrain around his home in Northern Arizona was similar to that of some of the great wine regions of the world.

Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards are a small, independent family run winery with very limited production.
