Tasting Notes

The winery is the project of Maynard James Keenan, the front man of the band Tool. Sancha is Tempranillo, possibly with a small splash of something else in it. New and used French oak shapes the wine. Deep, rich, gritty tannins and finishes dry and strong. It’s a bold with lots of dark fruit, spice, and chewiness.

Vineyard Cultivation

The Tempranillo for this wine is grown at Merkin Vineyards in Arizona's Page Springs/Cornville region. At 3000–3500 feet elevation, Tempranillo experiences warm days and cool nights that facilitate full phenolic ripeness whilst maintaining varietal acidity. The semi-arid terroir requires managed irrigation and reflects the intensity of high-altitude Arizona viticulture. Tempranillo thrives in these conditions, developing concentrated colour and flavour typical of the variety. The non-vintage approach allows Caduceus to blend across compatible vintage lots, selecting fruit lots that best express the varietal character and regional identity. Named after a personal reference, Sancha reflects Caduceus's tradition of meaningful wine naming.

Vinification

The Tempranillo undergoes fermentation with managed temperature control, utilising native yeasts to develop complexity. Tempranillo's natural tannins guide extraction decisions during fermentation, aiming for structure that will age well. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in French and American oak, allowing gradual integration and development of secondary flavours. The oak programme is calibrated to balance new oak influence with the varietal's inherent character. Non-vintage blending allows selection of component lots from different years, with final élevage in oak providing textural consistency before release.

About this Wine

Caduceus Cellars

Maynard James Keenan is a Pioneer in Arizona Winemaking and created the Caduceus Label for his Arizona Vineyard, Merkin Vineyards. One day, inbetween recording and touring for his award winning bands Tool, A Perfect Circle & Puscifer, he looked out from his patio and realised that the climate, soil and terrain around his home in Northern Arizona was similar to that of some of the great wine regions of the world.

Caduceus Cellars & Merkin Vineyards are a small, independent family run winery with very limited production.
