Tasting Notes

Cantina Del Pino Barbaresco 2016 captures the refined elegance and intricate complexity emblematic of Piedmont’s prestigious Barbaresco appellation. This entry-level Barbaresco is a thoughtfully crafted blend dominated by grapes from the illustrious Ovello vineyard, enriched with select contributions from Starderi and Gallina sites. These prime terroirs impart delicate layers of flavor and structure, showcasing the noble Nebbiolo grape's signature finesse and aromatic depth.

The 2016 vintage stands out for its exceptional balance of power and grace, thanks to ideal growing conditions that yielded pristine grapes with vibrant acidity and concentrated character. This harmonious climate nurtured a wine bursting with captivating aromas of rose petals, ripe red cherries, and subtle spice undertones. The palate reveals a silky texture and well-integrated tannins, leading to a persistent and elegant finish that highlights Barbaresco’s renowned aging potential.

With a remarkable 95-point rating from Vinous, this release exemplifies Cantina Del Pino’s commitment to excellence and meticulous craftsmanship. Sourced directly from a premium private cellar, this Barbaresco offers both immediate enjoyment and promising aging prospects, making it an exceptional collectible for enthusiasts seeking authentic Piedmontese expression.

Ideal for pairing with rich Italian dishes such as truffle risotto, roasted game, or aged cheeses, the 2016 Barbaresco expresses a sophisticated profile that elevates any dining experience or wine collection. Critic Scores

The 2016 Barbaresco is a knock-out. And it is, for lack of a better word, the entry-level wine in this range. Freshly cut flowers, mint, cinnamon, red berry fruit and orange zest are some of the notes that lift from a Barbaresco that is all class. There is plenty of structure, but the purity of the fruit is so striking that the tannins are not especially noticeable. The 2016 is a stunning wine, that’s all there is to it.

Iris, menthol, cranberry and exotic spice aromas take center stage. Elegant and focused, the fresh, polished palate doles our pomegranate, red cherry, licorice and baking spice while sleek, fine-grained tannins offer lithe support.

The Cantina del Pino 2016 Barbaresco offers a classic portrait of the Nebbiolo grape. This winery always releases its Barbaresco wines one year later than its peers (who are now selling 2017). That extra year of aging serves to further polish and sharpen pretty aromas of wild berry, licorice, camphor ash and dried orange peel. Like the other wines from this terrific portfolio, this Barbaresco is defined by its energy and electric personality. You can drink it now, or put this wine in your cellar for longer aging. It performs beautifully either way.

Plump and permeated by rose, cherry, raspberry, iron, tar and tobacco flavors, this red has power and intensity. Assertive tannins emerge on the finish, yet this has plenty in reserve. Shows a fine purity and harmony

Vineyard Cultivation

Cantina Del Pino produces Barbaresco from vineyards in the Barbaresco zone of Piedmont, Italy. This UNESCO-listed region is characterised by hillside vineyards planted to Nebbiolo on mixed soils of clay, limestone, and sand that provide excellent drainage and mineral character. The 2016 vintage in Piedmont was a balanced growing season with good ripeness and manageable yields. Barbaresco vineyards benefit from cool nights and autumn conditions that preserve Nebbiolo's natural acidity whilst allowing full phenolic ripeness. Cantina Del Pino's commitment to traditional production extends to the vineyard, where careful site management and harvest decisions prioritise fruit quality. The region's historical reputation for elegant, age-worthy Nebbiolo reflects soil and climate factors that create wines of finesse rather than power.

Vinification

The 2016 Barbaresco underwent traditional Piedmont vinification methods. Nebbiolo grapes were harvested when achieving optimal maturity and fermented with extended skin contact, typical for the region, developing colour and tannin structure. Fermentation likely proceeded with natural temperature management in classic style. Following fermentation, the wine aged in large wooden vessels or barrique according to Cantina Del Pino's house style. The minimum legal ageing for Barbaresco DOCG is nine months in wood plus additional bottle maturation. The 2016 vintage's tannin structure supports extended ageing, and the wine would have undergone careful élevage permitting gradual development. The decade since vintage now allows appreciation of the wine's evolved complexity.
