Casanova di Neri was purchased by current proprietor Giacomo Neri’s father in 1971. Today, the estate’s 155 acres of vineyards are located mostly east of the town of Montalcino, including Cerretalto, a 12-acre parcel, while the 62-acre Tenuta Nuova lies farther south.

Tasting Notes

Casanova Di Neri Tenuta Nuova Brunello Di Montalcino 2012 exemplifies the art of premium Tuscan winemaking, crafted from the prestigious Montalcino region’s finest Sangiovese Grosso grapes. This exceptional vintage is born from an illustrious estate comprising 155 meticulously maintained acres, including the renowned 62-acre Tenuta Nuova vineyard and the celebrated 12-acre Cerretalto parcel, both situated southeast and east of Montalcino respectively. These vineyards benefit from ideal growing conditions characteristic of the 2012 vintage, known for producing balanced and elegant wines with remarkable aging potential.

Under the expert guidance of Giacomo Neri, whose family has nurtured Casanova di Neri since 1971, this Brunello displays a rich and sophisticated profile. The wine reveals an enticing bouquet of ripe cherries and plum, intertwined with subtle Mediterranean herb nuances. Expert oak aging adds refined layers of tobacco and toasted vanilla, enhancing its complexity. The palate is structured with velvety tannins and a lingering finish that highlights the unique terroir of Montalcino.

This 2012 Tenuta Nuova Brunello demonstrates excellent balance and precision, attributes that earned it a perfect 100-point score from James Suckling and a 97-point accolade from International Wine Review. Sourced from a premium private cellar, this wine remains a rare and coveted gem for collectors and enthusiasts alike, celebrated for its power and finesse.

Rich in tradition and crafted with meticulous attention to detail, Casanova Di Neri Tenuta Nuova 2012 remains a distinguished representation of Brunello di Montalcino. Its exceptional depth and complexity make it a refined choice for discerning palates seeking a top-tier Italian red wine with impressive longevity and character.

Critic Scores

The 2012 Tenuta Nouva is without a doubt one of the most impressive wines I have tasted from the vintage. Year after year Tenuta Nuova is amongst the most compelling wines from Montalcino, and 2012 is certainly no exception as this gorgeous Brunello instantly opens with complex aromatics of blackberries, cherries, leather, floral, spices, dried soil along with hints of graphite and freshly ground coffee all taking shape in the glass. On the palate this is full-bodied and velvety with beautifully polished tannins and remarkable depth and balance. This continues to impress, showing wonderful freshness as its expands on to the finish, leaving gorgeous red fruits, leather and exotic spices lingering on and on. While this is already outstanding, it should continue to age gracefully over the next decade and beyond. This ranks along side the best vintages of Tenuta Nuova in over a decade, and is a sensational effort from the entire team at Casanova di Neri.

This edition of Casanova di Neri's celebrated single-vineyard wine opens to a luminous garnet color and exuberant fruit aromas. The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova offers a lot to the bouquet, from sweet cherry aromas to savory tones of tobacco and leather. This wine shows a powerful inner motor of flavor concentration and density that propels it forward. All that density and richness wraps thickly over the palate. This is a lasting wine of brawn and muscle.

Very fresh and floral on the nose with rose petals, cherries and hot stones. Medium to full body, linear and fine tannins and a fresh finish. So linear and focused. Wow.

Precise balance sets the stage for cherry, black currant, violet and tobacco flavors in this smooth, intense red. The tannins are present yet well-integrated, and this persists with echoes of fruit and tobacco. Reveals an element of spice on the aftertaste. *Collectible*

Vineyard Cultivation

Tenuta Nuova represents a defined site within Casanova di Neri's estate, selected for consistent expression of Montalcino's terroir characteristics. The 2012 vintage presented a cooler, wetter growing season, with spring frosts and uneven ripening across Tuscany. The vineyard's microclimatic advantages—aspect, soil depth, and elevation—moderated these challenges, though the final fruit arrived with naturally elevated acidity and more restrained concentration than warmer years. These conditions ultimately favour wines of structure and longevity, qualities particularly valued in Brunello.

Vinification

Indigenous yeast fermentation in temperature-controlled conditions allowed slow, complex fermentation. Extended post-fermentation skin contact—a hallmark of the house style—built tannin structure and phenolic depth. Élevage occurred in large Slavonian oak, the estate's traditional cooperage choice, over an extended period to permit slow oxidative integration and aromatic development. Malolactic fermentation in barrel softened the vintage's natural acidity. Extended bottle ageing preceded release, in keeping with Brunello qualitative standards.
