Critic Scores

The deep red 2022 Cabernet Sauvignon Mariana’s comes from a ridge south of Peter Martin Rey farmed by Bill Brousseau, and by comparison, it’s more intense in its fruit character. It’s expressive and beautiful on the nose, with surprising purity in its cassis, raspberry liqueur, hints of red apple, and floral perfume. Bringing more intensity compared to the Peter Martin Rey, it’s fully ripe, has notable freshness, and a long finish. It should have at least 15 years of longevity. Drink 2026-2040.

Vineyard Cultivation

Ceritas, founded by John Raytek and Phoebe Bass, is known for precise, terroir-focused wines drawn from around a dozen sites in Sonoma and the Santa Cruz Mountains. Mariana's comes from a ridge in the Santa Cruz Mountains, south of the Peter Martin Ray vineyard, farmed by respected grower Bill Brousseau. The high-elevation, cool-climate site, with its rocky mountain soils, yields Cabernet Sauvignon of pronounced fruit intensity, freshness and structure. Farming favours low yields and restraint aligned with the Ceritas ethos. The 2022 vintage in coastal California brought a warm spell late in the season, and attentive picking preserved the purity, floral perfume and acidity that mark this bottling.

Vinification

In line with Ceritas's minimal-intervention winemaking, the Cabernet was fermented with native yeasts and handled gently to build fine, ripe tannin without heaviness. Maceration was measured to capture the vineyard's fruit intensity while retaining freshness, and the wine was matured in French oak with restrained new-wood use, favouring seasoned barrels so that cassis, raspberry-liqueur and floral aromatics remain to the fore. The wine was aged in barrel and bottled with minimal handling, built for at least fifteen years of cellaring per critic assessment. Precise whole-bunch, new-oak and élevage figures for the 2022 Mariana's are not published and would need confirmation.
