Ceritas wines stand out for their rare combination of precision, purity, and a deep respect for terroir.

We often hear about California Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays being “Burgundian.” But how often are they really? For our money, no one in northern California comes closer to the Burgundian ideal than John Raytek does.

They have twelve sites that they source from today in Sonoma and Santa Cruz

Critic Scores

The 2023 Pinot Noir Annabelle pours a youthful ruby and offers layers of ripe floral perfume that unfold in the glass, with wild berries and fresh herbs. Medium-bodied, with notes of brambly fruit and citrus oil, ripe tannins, fresh acidity, and a long mineral finish, this is another one of the great wines that will take time to show its full spectrum. It’s a gorgeous wine to drink over the next 20 years

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Ceritas, founded by John Raytek and Phoebe Bass, is celebrated for precise, Burgundian-styled Pinot Noir and Chardonnay drawn from cool sites in Sonoma and the Santa Cruz Mountains. Cuvee Annabelle is a West Sonoma Coast bottling, blended from ridge-top vineyards in this cool, Pacific-facing appellation where fog, wind and marine-influenced soils give small berries, bright acidity and floral, mineral-driven Pinot Noir. Low yields and restraint in the vineyard support the wine's finesse. The 2023 West Sonoma Coast season was cool and drawn out, with slow, even ripening that preserved perfume and freshness, producing the ripe floral character, brambly fruit and mineral length shown in the young wine.

Vinification

In keeping with Ceritas's low-intervention winemaking, the fruit was fermented with native yeasts, typically with a proportion of whole clusters for aromatic lift and structure, and handled gently to keep the texture fine. Pressing to French oak was followed by maturation largely in neutral barrels, with restrained new-wood use, preserving the wine's floral perfume, brambly fruit, citrus-oil and mineral detail. Élevage in barrel precedes bottling with minimal handling, and the wine is built to develop over many years. Exact whole-cluster percentage, new-oak proportion and time in barrel for the 2023 Annabelle are not published and would need confirmation.
