Tasting Notes

Delamotte Blanc de Blancs Collection 2008 is a profound expression of mature Côte des Blancs Chardonnay, combining the razor-sharp structure of the celebrated 2008 vintage with the richness and complexity developed through 15 years of lees ageing.

The nose is initially precise and distinctly mineral, opening with crushed chalk, oyster shell, sea spray and flint, before revealing layers of preserved lemon, white peach and crisp orchard fruit. With air, the wine becomes increasingly generous, developing notes of fresh brioche, golden pastry, toasted almond and warm shortcrust, while retaining a persistent saline freshness.

The palate is powerful, concentrated and vinous, yet remarkably controlled. Fine, energetic bubbles carry flavours of lemon zest, green apple and white stone fruit across a dense core of chalky minerality. Extended lees ageing brings greater breadth and texture, with nuances of brioche, hazelnut and lightly toasted pastry providing richness without compromising the wine's precision. There is an impressive tension between maturity and freshness: the fruit has gained depth, but the acidity remains vibrant and beautifully integrated.

The finish is exceptionally long, dry and saline, with lingering impressions of citrus peel, chalk, iodine and toasted almond. Despite its age, the 2008 remains strikingly youthful and structured, suggesting considerable further development ahead.

A Blanc de Blancs of serious scale and sophistication, Delamotte Collection 2008 demonstrates why 2008 has become one of Champagne's benchmark modern vintages. Its combination of maritime minerality, mature autolytic complexity and formidable acidity makes it equally compelling to drink now with time in the glass or to continue ageing.
