Aged in 55% new oak, the 2025 Clerc Milon reveals its oak influence, but it's not the focus of the wine; it's an element that does precisely what is expected of it: to support the overall aromas and allow the details to shine. Nuances of graphite are followed by notes of toast and then floral nuances. Everything is perfectly balanced, no excess, but great relevance, with a cohesive performance that celebrates olfactory harmony. On the palate, caution is advised. One can clearly sense that the extraction was measured and controlled, and that the climate favored the fine grain of the tannins. These tannins, in fact, provide both finesse and power in equal measure. A linear, ample, powerful, and invigorating wine. A concentrated burst of energy with finesse, temperament, and persistence. Charming, gracious and quite distinctive aromatically, with a nuttiness that I was not expecting and a saline note to the minerality too; there's more florality here than when tasted at the UGCB with much more than just the hint of peony when re-tasted at Mouton. There's also a reassuringly dark, Pauillac, berry and stone fruit signature. There's plenty of graphite too, a little scratch of the pencil sharpener, a hint of the cedar to come and a little liquorice root on the finale. Plump and deep, layered and very classical, but with a crystalline purity that has been rather more recently acquired. I love the beautiful pinch, grip and shape to the fantail finish. Tasting the 2025 vintage, I was reminded several times of the brilliance of 2022, though the fruit expression this year feels even more vivid. On entry, a cream-like texture softly supports the palate, followed by notes of iris and violet that unfold with airy grace, so light and agile that I almost feel lifted onto tiptoe. Then, a subtle fleur de sel salinity seems to arise from nowhere, quietly seeping into the wine and interweaving with tannins of a soy milk-like texture, rendering an already supple body as smooth and silky as savoury tofu.
