Tasting Notes

Château Coutet Sauternes 2025 exemplifies the rich heritage and exquisite craftsmanship of Barsac’s renowned sweet wines. With a history dating back to the 13th century, this estate originally served as an English fortress before evolving into one of the region’s most prestigious Premier Cru Classé properties, as designated in the historic 1855 Classification.

Under the stewardship of the Baly family since 1977, Château Coutet has emerged as a benchmark producer in Barsac, celebrated for its intensely aromatic sweet wines. The 2025 vintage showcases vibrant acidity paired with a distinctive limestone-driven freshness, hallmarks of the estate’s unique terroir. This combination delivers exceptional balance and complexity, promising remarkable ageing potential for discerning collectors and enthusiasts.

The Barsac appellation, situated on the left bank of the Garonne River, benefits from limestone-rich soils and a microclimate that encourages the growth of noble rot. This phenomenon concentrates natural sugars and flavors, resulting in a luscious texture with layered notes of apricot, honey, and citrus zest. These elements collectively create a refined and elegant wine that reflects the exceptional character of its origin.

Offered as an exclusive En Primeur opportunity, Château Coutet Sauternes 2025 allows early access to one of Bordeaux’s most coveted sweet wines before bottling and market release. This pre-release not only ensures allocation from a top-tier estate but also provides an attractive pricing advantage ahead of its anticipated arrival in Australia by late 2028.

Key features include:

  • One of Barsac’s oldest estates, with roots in the 13th century and recognition as a Premier Cru Classé in the landmark 1855 Classification.
  • Produced by the Baly family since 1977, known for crafting intensely aromatic wines with vibrant acidity and limestone-driven freshness.
  • Exclusive En Primeur offer providing early access to a highly sought-after Bordeaux sweet wine vintage.

Critic Scores

The bouquet of Coutet 2025 unfolds in a delicate, subtle, almost shy, or rather cautious way! Notes of orange peel, acacia blossom, mirabelle plums, raspberries, and nectarines create an unlikely symbiosis and form only a part of the exceptional olfactory spectrum. Dense and slightly saline on the attack, the wine unfolds seamlessly, with verve and energy. It benefits from the invaluable support of an incisive structure that ensures tension and temperament with rare elegance. A wine of improbable subtlety, yet generous, fresh, and persistent. 2030-2085 - 97 to 99 Points - Yves Beck

The nose shows lemon zest, resinous notes, apple, beeswax, a hint of curry, beneath which is chalky stone; full-bodied palate, rich fruit, opulent, yet not overloaded, very good acid structure, a lot of finesse, long, spicy finish. An excellent sweet wine with great reserves. (Drink from 2030 to 2070) - 96 to 98 Points - Adrian Van Velsen

The 2025 Coutet is redolent of burnt sugar, crème brûlée, spice, passion fruit and candied ginger. Always quite rich texturally, Coutet blossoms beautifully on the palate with plenty of textural presence and body. It's a gorgeous wine by any measure. Tasted two times. - 94 to 96 Points - Antonio Galloni

Pale straw-colored, the 2025 Coutet needs a little swirling to coax out notes of pineapple upside-down cake and passion fruit, followed by hints of beeswax, crème brûlée, and lemon verbena with a waft of chalk dust. The concentrated palate has beautiful purity and depth with a lively backbone and a long, fragrant finish. - 94 to 96 Points - Lisa Perrotti-Brown
