Tasting Notes

The 2019 Château de Sales is a standout vintage that brilliantly showcases the estate's recent efforts to build mid-palate weight and sharpen its overall focus. This wine rolls effortlessly out of the glass with an intense, darkly seductive bouquet of baked cherries, plum preserves, and warm fruitcake, all beautifully accented by intricate nuances of licorice, dark chocolate, cigar ash, and fragrant earth. Industry experts have celebrated this release, led by Georgina Hindle of Decanter who awarded it a spectacular 96 points, calling it a suave and charming wine filled with bright summer berry touches, supple tannins, and a beautifully minty, fresh finish.

On the palate, the wine delivers a pure, medium-to full-bodied experience that balances a core of ripe black fruit with a lovely sense of linear focus. Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW awarded the vintage a 91/93 point score in Wine Advocate, commending its seductive profile, rounded tannins, and long, perfumed finish. This praise is mirrored by Jane Anson, who scored it 92 points and noted how sleek and enjoyable the wine feels, highlighting it as an excellent medium-term drinker. Additional accolades come from Jeb Dunnuck, who gave it 90 points for its purity of fruit, pretty floral aromatics, and sappy herb complexity, while John Gilman also rated it 90 points, praising its fine-grained tannins, measured fourteen percent alcohol, and classic, promising finish.

The wine leaves a lasting, balanced impression that will pair wonderfully with duck breast, roasted lamb, or wild mushroom risotto. While it is accessible enough to show its instant generosity of fruit right now, it has the structural integrity to cellar beautifully over the next ten to fifteen years, with some critics predicting an even longer evolution.

Critic Scores

A serious, brooding nose, darkly seductive with touches of sweet oak and black berries. Alive and fruit forward on the palate but also quite linear and direct. The instant generosity of fruit flavours is really appealing, the mouth is filled with bright summer berry touches and the tannins are ample and supple coating the tongue yet this still has an aerial quality. Feels suave and charming - well worked with lots of precise details with such a minty fresh finish. Excellent ageing potential. 2025-2045

This is a really enjoyable, sleek and well put together de Sales, and you can see the work that has been undertaken over the past few years to build up the mid palate and generally improve the focus and fruit delivery. An enjoyable medium term drinker.

The 2019 De Sales has a deep garnet-purple color, rolling effortlessly out of the glass with impressively intense baked cherries, plum preserves and fruitcake scents with nuances of potpourri, licorice, chocolate box and fragrant earth. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock-full of ripe, seductive black fruit preserves, framed by rounded tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and perfumed.
