Tasting Notes

Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Santa Caterina D’Oro 2015 represents the pinnacle of Tuscan winemaking, showcasing the extraordinary qualities of the renowned Montalcino terroir. Located on the south east slope of Montalcino, near the medieval village of Castelnuovo dell’Abate and the historic 11th-century Romanesque Abbey of Sant’Antimo, the estate benefits from a unique microclimate and soil composition that impart exceptional depth and complexity to its wines.

Crafted exclusively from Sangiovese grapes, this Riserva captures the essence of the 2015 vintage, a year marked by ideal weather conditions that promoted optimal grape ripeness and concentration. The meticulous craftsmanship and traditional techniques employed by Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona are evident in the wine’s remarkable balance and refined elegance.

This Brunello Riserva has earned critical acclaim, including a rare 100-point rating from James Suckling, underscoring its superior quality and aging potential. The wine reveals captivating aromas of ripe dark cherry, plum, and wild berries, intricately woven with nuances of spice, leather, and earthy minerals. On the palate, it offers a harmonious structure, velvety tannins, and a lingering finish that highlights its complexity and longevity.

As a distinguished product from the celebrated Montalcino region, the Santa Caterina D’Oro Riserva stands as a testament to the rich heritage and world-famous reputation of Brunello wines. This 2015 vintage is ideal for both immediate enjoyment and extended cellaring, delivering an exceptional expression of Tuscan tradition and the legacy of the Ciacci Piccolomini d’Aragona estate.

Critic Scores

The opulence of fruit and complexity of earth, meat, mushroom and cedar is breathtaking. It’s full-bodied, deep and powerful with so much intensity and depth. Chewy and layered, it goes on for minutes. Give it even more time.

The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna di Pianrosso Santa Caterina d'Oro is a fine and delicate wine that cleverly delivers the intensity of the vintage but without the heaviness or the ripeness. This wine holds back, just enough, to affirm its poised balance in terms of fruit richness, texture and tannic structure. It shows symmetry throughout. Dark cherry fruit, cassis, plum, lavender and campfire ash set the tone. The mouthfeel is thickly woven and generous, more so than the more linear and focused 2016 Brunello Pianrosso (that I preferred by a tiny margin)

There’s a bright edge to this red, harnessing the cherry, strawberry, rosehip, mineral and tobacco flavors that build on the palate to a long finish. Displays terrific energy and balance, with an aftertaste that echoes both fruit and savory elements.

Vinification & Cultivation

Vineyard Cultivation

Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona has been producing Brunello from vineyards in the Montalcino hill zone since the early 20th century. The Santa Caterina d'Oro parcel sits within the protected Brunello region's sandy-clay soils, where 100% Sangiovese Grosso vines benefit from the Mediterranean microclimate. The 2015 vintage proved exceptionally favourable, with spring frosts largely avoided and summer heat of ideal intensity allowing full phenolic development. Traditional Tuscany viticulture practices govern the estate, with selective canopy management and hand harvesting to ensure berry quality.

Vinification

The 2015 vintage was hand-harvested at optimal ripeness (26-27 Brix typically) and destemmed entirely. Fermentation occurred in temperature-controlled stainless-steel vessels for approximately 20 days, employing indigenous yeasts native to the vineyard. The resulting wine underwent 48 months of oak aging in a combination of new and second-passage 50-hectolitre barrels—a traditional Brunello approach demanding extended elevage. Malolactic conversion completed naturally in barrel. No filtration was applied, preserving the wine's structure and aromatics.
