Tasting Notes

Cobos Malbec 2022 is a masterful representation of Mendoza’s finest terroirs, expertly crafted under the guidance of renowned winemaker Paul Hobbs since 1988. This vintage captures the distinctive qualities of Luján de Cuyo and Valle de Uco, two of Argentina’s most prestigious wine regions, celebrated for their high-altitude vineyards and unique climatic conditions that enhance the grape’s vibrant purity and structural balance.

Building on the legacy of the groundbreaking 1999 Cobos Malbec, which elevated Argentina’s reputation on the international wine stage, the 2022 edition continues this tradition of excellence. Emphasizing sustainable viticulture and meticulous winemaking, this wine offers a refined expression of Malbec that combines elegance, complexity, and a true sense of place.

The 2022 Cobos Malbec unfolds with an inviting bouquet of dark berries, ripe plum, and delicate floral aromas, enriched by subtle hints of spice and vanilla derived from careful oak aging. On the palate, it reveals a harmonious balance of lush fruit flavors, polished tannins, and lively acidity, making it both approachable now and suitable for further aging.

Produced with a strong commitment to environmental stewardship, this wine reflects the synergy between Mendoza’s high-altitude vineyards and innovative winemaking techniques. The result is a Malbec distinguished by its depth, finesse, and vibrant character, embodying the essence of its terroir.

Available through an International On Demand - La Place de Bordeaux Pre-Arrival Offer, with estimated dispatch from April 2026 onwards, this release presents an exclusive opportunity to secure a bottle of this exceptional vintage well ahead of its market debut.

Critic Scores

Rich and profound with graphite, dark fruits, a touch of dark chocolate and a lifted sense of brightness. The palate is full-bodied and mouth-coating yet balanced and lustrous—decadent, showing firm, polished tannins and a thick, seamless veil of fruit. Sourced from selected malbec parcels in both Luján and Uco. Drink now or hold. - Jacobo Garcia-Andrade Llamas

(Mendoza; 100% Malbec; 15% alcohol; tasted at the Joanne press tasting). Incense. Pot pourri. Some rose petal. A hint of violet perhaps but aromatically this is a little introvert for now – more so than the 2021 as I recall. Dark cherry and berry fruits, a little damson too. Oyster shell. A deep dark black-hole core of perfectly ripe and plush fruits, beautifully outlined by the super-svelte if considerable tannins. Less immediately appealing than the 2021 and perhaps even more of a vin de garde and with very significant aging potential. This seems eternal on the finish. Serious and holding back its charms for now. I’d like to be the one to re-awaken from its gentle slumber in a decade or two! 98. - Colin Hay

Potpourri incense aromatics, so floral and fragrant. Thick and glossy, there’s succulence and high acidity with plenty of freshness but there’s also plenty of heft and this delivers a broad and filling palate. On the richer side, despite the cooling, fresh acidity. It’s a showy and confident wine that really delivers plenty of enjoyment. Sticky liquorice on the finish with lashings of oak and bitter chocolate. A Malbec with personality. Easy to like this! Owner Paul Hobbs, winemaker Andres Vignoni. - Georgina Hindle
