Tasting Notes

2022 was a warmer year throughout both Gattinara and the Langhe but grape growers and winemakers who got it right made beautiful wines in this vintage. When we travelled here in March 22, all were espousing the quality of the vintage. Roberto expected wines that were more austere and difficult given the effect of heat on Nebbiolo aromatics and tannin but the resultant wines are more pleasant and immediately pleasing. Though they may not have the 40-50 year longevity that cooler vintages do, they are easier to love as younger wines.

Coming from four crus within the Gattinara commune, ranging between 290–420 metres in elevation (Molsino, Valferana, Garavoglie, and Casacce vineyards).

After gentle destemming and crushing, fermentation and maceration of 18-20 days occurred in 45HL truncated conical oak vats followed by aging in large oak for 36 months before bottling. Roberto purchased 12 new Stockinger tini in recent years, with the others all originals from Nervi estate, some are 55 years old.

Critic Scores

A graceful and perfumed wine with aromas of peaches, wild strawberries, Parma violets, cherry pits and rhubarb with a touch of smoke. Firm and bony on the full-bodied palate, with tense, velvety, slightly dusty tannins. Polished and sleek finish. Drink or hold. 96 Points, James Suckling

The 2022 Gattinara pours a pale red-orange hue and shows an appealing, light-on-its-feet profile. Aromas of orange peel, tangerine, cranberries in pastry, and delicate spice emerge from the glass. Medium-bodied, it combines clarity of fruit with well-defined structure and refreshing acidity. This is a particularly attractive and approachable expression of the appellation that also delivers strong value. Drink 2026-2040.

Vineyard Cultivation

Gattinara is a distinct DOCG north of Barolo in the northern Piedmont region, known for Nebbiolo grown on steep, south-facing hillsides with granite and slate soils that impart mineral complexity. The Conterno and Nervi families have longstanding connections to Gattinara winemaking. Vineyards are traditionally farmed with careful site selection focused on mature vines that express terroir character. The 2022 vintage in Piedmont was warm and generally favourable, with good ripeness achieved. Nebbiolo from Gattinara typically shows fresher acidity and more delicate tannin structure compared to Barolo, reflecting the northern climate and soil mineralogy.

Vinification

Gattinara Nebbiolo follows the traditional Piedmontese model of whole-cluster or lightly-crushed fruit fermentation in temperature-controlled tanks using commercial or native yeasts. Maceration periods extend from three to four weeks to extract colour and develop the wine's characteristic structure. Following fermentation, the wine is aged in large Slavonian oak casks, typically for 12–18 months, allowing gradual oxidative evolution and tannin maturation without new-wood influence. After cask maturation, the wine may see a short period in bottle before release to permit tertiary flavour development.
