Tasting Notes

Few names in the wine world command as much reverence as Roberto Conterno. When the visionary force behind the iconic Giacomo Conterno estate directs his focus toward Alto Piemonte, the result is anything but ordinary. The Nervi-Conterno "Il Rosato" entirely redefines the category. Far from a casual summer sipper, this is a serious, terroir-driven masterpiece boasting a pedigree that rivals the finest Barolos.

Sourced from the historic, mineral-dense volcanic soils of Gattinara, the 2024 vintage brilliantly showcases the region’s signature alpine precision. The bouquet is utterly captivating, unfurling with notes of wild alpine strawberries, tart red cherries, and crushed rose petals, all grounded by an intense undercurrent of wet flint and mountain herbs. On the palate, it is uncompromisingly bone-dry, driven by a laser-sharp acidity and a deeply savory, saline minerality. Structured, persistent, and remarkably complex, this is an intellectual bottle that deserves a prime spot at your holiday table.

Critic Scores

Made from 100% Nebbiolo, the 2024 Il Rosato pours a platinum/pink hue and immediately shows an inviting freshness. Aromas of strawberries, white peach, citrus blossom, and wet stone lift from the glass. Medium-bodied, it has refreshing energy on the palate, with notes of grapefruit, saline minerality, and a softly stony texture. Bottled under screwcap, it gains brightness and cherry fruit as it warms in the glass while remaining beautifully balanced. Despite a challenging season marked by roughly 1,900 millimeters of rainfall, it comes together beautifully and is already a pleasure to drink. Drink 2026-2029.

Vineyard Cultivation

Cantine Nervi is the historic Gattinara house in northern Piedmont, acquired in 2018 by Roberto Conterno of Barolo's Giacomo Conterno, and now bottled as Nervi-Conterno. Gattinara sits on acidic, iron-rich volcanic porphyry soils at altitude in the Alpine foothills, quite distinct from the Langhe's calcareous marl, giving Nebbiolo a lighter frame with vivid acidity and salinity. Il Rosato is made from 100% Nebbiolo grown across the estate's Gattinara holdings. The 2024 growing season was notably wet, with roughly 1,900 millimetres of rainfall, yet the fruit came together well, retaining the freshness and mineral drive that define the site. Farming follows Conterno's meticulous, low-yield, quality-first regime.

Vinification

The 2024 Il Rosato is a serious, dry Nebbiolo rose built for structure rather than mere prettiness. Hand-picked fruit is pressed for a pale platinum-pink juice, taking only limited skin contact so that Nebbiolo's phenolics lend cut and texture without heavy colour or tannin. Fermentation is temperature-controlled to preserve the wine's energy, with the emphasis on freshness, salinity and precision. The wine is raised to retain its stony, citrus-blossom aromatics and is bottled under screwcap to protect brightness. The result has refreshing medium-bodied energy, grapefruit and wild-strawberry fruit, wet-stone minerality and the acidity to evolve over three to five years. Exact maceration time and vessel detail were not published.
