Sourced from Gattinara's most iconic volcanic amphitheater, this bottling offers Grand Cru-level complexity under the strict, legendary direction of Roberto Conterno

A powerfully architectural 2021 vintage; its formidable tannic spine and vibrant acidity demand a minimum of 5 to 10 years of cellaring to unfold.

Combines the density and expansive dark-fruit profile typically reserved for top-tier Barolo with the distinct, savory, alpine-saline finish of northern Piedmont.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Conterno Cantine Nervi Gattinara "Vigna Molsino" is a spectacular, foundational bottle for any serious collector looking to expand their footprint in Alto Piemonte under the lens of the world's greatest winemaking talents.

Here is an original overview of this vintage, followed by brief, collector-focused bullet points.

The 2021 Vigna Molsino represents the pinnacle of what happens when Roberto Conterno applies his uncompromising Langhe philosophy to the high-altitude, volcanic hills of Gattinara. Molsino is an amphitheater vineyard famed for delivering unparalleled breadth and density. In the exceptional 2021 vintage, this single-cru Nebbiolo (Spanna) tips the scales at an authoritative 14% ABV after spending more than three years in traditional botti.

The nose is a tightly wound, aristocratic display of dark berry fruit, freshly turned earth, and pipe tobacco, punctuated by high-toned pomegranate, mint, and crushed orange zest. On the palate, it exhibits immense vigor and tension. It is a dense, expansive wine wrapped in a formidable web of finely woven, chalky tannins and driven by a dramatic, salty volcanic minerality. It is a brilliant, muscular puppy of a wine that is built for the long haul.

Critic Scores

Elegant, bright ruby red colour. On the nose initially fine hints of freshly baked bread, dark berry fruit, with slight hints of earth, after a little time hints of mint and ripe pomegranate. On the palate great vigour and lots of elegance, dark fruit, embedded in finely woven tannins, vibrant, salty finish, long. Falstaff, 96 points

From a south- and southeast-facing vineyard at 240 to 420 meters on steep volcanic slopes, the 2021 Gattinara Vigna Molsino displays a more structured and alpine profile. Aromas of balsamic herbs, juniper, wildflowers, black raspberries, and smoky earth lift from the glass. Medium-bodied, it carries more tension and grip, with chiseled tannins and subtle cedar notes that will need time to fully harmonize. This is clearly built for long aging and should reward patience. Drink 2027-2050.

Vineyard Cultivation

Nervi-Conterno's Vigna Molsino comes from Gattinara's most celebrated volcanic amphitheatre, a natural bowl of steep, south- and southeast-facing slopes between roughly 240 and 420 metres. The soils are acidic volcanic porphyry, iron-rich and free-draining, giving Nebbiolo an alpine, savoury and saline character quite unlike the Langhe. Cantine Nervi, the historic Gattinara house, has been owned since 2018 by Roberto Conterno of Giacomo Conterno, who farms the cru with low yields and exacting attention. The 2021 vintage produced a powerfully structured wine with a formidable tannic spine and vibrant acidity, a classic long-ageing profile that needs a minimum of five to ten years and rewards patience over decades.

Vinification

Molsino is vinified in the traditional northern-Piedmont manner, with hand-harvested Nebbiolo fermented on skins for an extended period to build the wine's dense structure and dark-fruit depth. Maceration draws the chiselled, fine-grained tannins that give the 2021 its architecture, while native acidity keeps the wine taut. Ageing is in large-format wood, favouring slow, oxidative maturation and integration over overt oak flavour, with subtle cedar notes emerging alongside balsamic herbs, juniper and smoky earth. The wine is bottled unfiltered or lightly handled to preserve energy. Built for the long haul, it shows freshly baked bread, dark berry, mint and pomegranate over a vibrant, salty finish. Exact cask sizes and elevage length were not published.
