Represents the most austere, mineral-driven expression in the Nervi portfolio, prioritizing structural "cut," intense salinity, and geological transparency over sheer power

Driven by a piercing combination of high-altitude acidity and iron-clad tannins, this vintage possesses the necessary architecture to cellar gracefully—and potentially outlive the Molsino—over the next two decades.

Perfect for collectors who favor the high-toned, intellectual elegance of cool-climate, high-altitude Nebbiolo, delivering a unique savory profile of crushed rocks, mint, and slate.

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Conterno Cantine Nervi Gattinara "Vigna Valferana" stands as the intellectual foil to the broader, more muscular Molsino. For collectors who value transparency of terroir, high-tension energy, and laser-like focus, this is arguably the jewel of the estate's single-vineyard portfolio.

While Molsino captures the imagination with its sweeping warmth and density, the steep, west-facing Vigna Valferana—traditionally known as the "Iron Valley"—delivers an entirely different manifestation of Nebbiolo. Sourced from porous, iron- and porphyry-rich volcanic soils, the 2021 vintage is a masterclass in chiseled precision and structural athletic tension.

On the nose, it is immediately striking and deeply complex, throwing off ethereal notes of blood orange, crushed slate, wild raspberries, white pepper, and a vermouth-like alpine herb complexity. The palate is defined by its searing energy, boasting a fiercely savory, saline core wrapped in fine, tightly woven, and somewhat angular chalky tannins. It lacks the mid-palate fat of a typical Langhe wine, opting instead for a long, chiseled, and persistent finish of pure volcanic rock and iron.

Critic Scores

From an eight-hectare site with south and southwest exposure at roughly 300 to 360 meters, the 2021 Gattinara Vigna Valferana delivers a refined and lifted expression of the vintage. Aromas of crushed flowers, wild red fruit, incense, and subtle iron notes reflect both soil and microclimate. Medium-bodied, it is precise and chiseled on the palate, with fine tannins, refreshing acidity, and exceptional clarity. As it opens, notes of church incense emerge and add further depth. This is a wine that rewards patience and attention. Drink 2027-2047.

he 2021 Gattinara Vigna Valferana is absolutely gorgeous. A wine of energy, tension and cut, the 2021 is immediately captivating. Crushed rocks, iron, slate, white pepper and mint all race across the palate. The persistent, intensely saline finish is a thing of beauty. The Valferana is a Gattinara for readers who enjoy reds built on energy and tension. This is so expressive, even in the early going.

Vineyard Cultivation

Vigna Valferana is Nervi-Conterno's most austere, mineral-driven Gattinara cru, an eight-hectare site with south and southwest exposure at roughly 300 to 360 metres. Its acidic volcanic porphyry soils, high altitude and cool microclimate give a Nebbiolo of piercing salinity, iron and crushed-rock character rather than sheer power. Cantine Nervi, the historic Gattinara estate, has been owned since 2018 by Roberto Conterno of Giacomo Conterno, who farms these steep slopes with low yields and close attention to soil and site. The 2021 season delivered a refined, lifted and chiselled expression, combining high-toned acidity with iron-clad tannins and the architecture to age gracefully for up to two decades, arguably even outliving the Molsino.

Vinification

Valferana is made in the classic traditional style, with hand-picked Nebbiolo fermented on its skins to extract fine, precise tannins while safeguarding the wine's clarity and tension. Extended maceration builds structure without coarseness, and the wine's exceptional transparency to site is prioritised throughout. Ageing takes place in large-format wood, allowing slow maturation and integration while keeping oak flavour in the background so the crushed-rock, incense and iron notes remain to the fore. The 2021 is precise and refreshing on the palate, with fine tannins, vibrant acidity and an intensely saline, persistent finish, a wine built on energy and cut that rewards several years of cellaring. Specific cask sizes and elevage length were not published.
