Tasting Notes

Citrus is the dominant feature throughout this wine, in many guises. Soft, lemon curd elements on the nose, with edges of Kaffir lime and pink grapefruit to closely follow. Fresh lime zest and pretty talc are supported by white florals and pith-like textural quality. The palate is complex, long and even, with the chalky, supple texture lending integrity and wonderful length. Crawford River through and through, with many years ahead of it. Fresh, lively acidity and balanced weight is key to its drinkability now and longevity into the future. - Wine Makers Notes.

Critic Scores

A vibrant green gold. A multifaceted bouquet of pure lemon zest, orange blossom, jasmine and wet stone. Concentrated, gently textured and very energetic on the palate, culminating in a long, mouth-watering finish. My advice is to drink the Strata Riesling now while you wait for this to mature into something special over the next 10 years plus.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Crawford River was founded in 1975 by John Thomson at Condah in the Henty region of far south-west Victoria, one of Australia's coolest mainland wine districts. The estate vineyard is dry-grown on well-drained gravelly and clay-loam soils in a cool, maritime-influenced climate that gives slow ripening and naturally high acidity, conditions long recognised as ideal for Riesling. The family farms the site with an emphasis on low yields and fruit purity. The 2025 Riesling is the estate's flagship dry style, showing the concentrated citrus, floral and wet-stone character and taut structure for which the vineyard is known.

Vinification

Fruit was picked to preserve acidity and handled protectively, with a cool, controlled fermentation in stainless steel to make a dry, unwooded Riesling that retains lime zest, orange blossom and a chalky, pithy texture. The wine is built for both early drinking and long cellaring, with fresh, lively acidity as its spine. Exact picking dates, residual sugar and fermentation temperatures for the 2025 are not confirmed here; the estate also makes a separate Strata Riesling.

About this Wine

Crawford River

Crawford River wines has been family owned and operated since 1975, crafting wines exclusively from selected, hand-picked fruit grown in their estate vineyard. And it’s not just the fruit that comes directly from their estate, every wine is also vinified and bottled on site too. The fruit is brought to the winery in small parcels, where meticulous attention is paid to every tiniest detail. Patience and time are of the essence in this winery. The team at Crawford River believes in minimal interference and movement during vinification, preferring the fruit to naturally express their special terroir. It is their belief that this approach influences the pure and elegant qualities found in their wines.
Since 2005 there has been a happy confluence of young and old at Crawford River wines. While professionally trained and with numerous international vintages under her belt, Belinda knows there is no substitute for John´s 35+ years of experience in the Estate vineyard he created.

The Crawford River vineyard lies at the alluvial edge of a volcanic lava flow. The 11.5 Ha vineyard has its roots in an unusually complex, mineral-rich soil base. Gravelly, friable, basalt loam overlays permeable clay which in turn lies above a limestone base created by an ancient, risen seabed.
Riesling and Cabernet Sauvignon are the two main varieties in the vineyard, with smaller plantings of Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc. And with care comes quality; all major activities such as picking, pruning, leaf-plucking, shoot-thinning and green pruning are done lovingly by hand. Well done Crawford River crew!
