Tasting Notes

The 2024 Denton Shed Pinot Noir delivers everything you want from Yarra Valley Pinot at this price: bright red fruit, freshness, and understated depth. Aromas of cherry, rose petal and subtle spice lead into a finely shaped palate where lively acidity and gentle tannins keep the wine light on its feet yet quietly serious.

Sourced from Denton’s granite-rich View Hill vineyard, the wine blends freshness from the lower slopes with aromatic lift from higher, close-planted blocks. Made with 10% whole bunch, wild fermented and matured in mostly old oak, it’s bottled unfined and unfiltered to preserve purity and energy. Effortless to drink, but far from simple.

Critic Scores

Destemmed, natural-yeast fermented and kept on skins for 18 days with frequent plunging and foot stomping. Matured in 500L French oak puncheons (20% new) and left unsulphured for 18 months. A bright, medium, ruby red. There's lots going on here. Aromas of dark cherries, cherry and sandalwood, dried roses, orange peel and botanicals such as quinine and juniper. The palate is ripe and beautifully brought back into focus by the wine's refreshing acidity and grippy yet fine tannins. Finishes ferrous and long. - Philip Rich (Halliday Wine Companion)

Vineyard Cultivation

Denton is a Yarra Valley estate built around the View Hill vineyard, planted on an unusual band of granitic sand over granite boulders that is rare in the region and lends the wines a mineral, savoury signature. The 'Shed' Pinot Noir is the estate's approachable, early-drinking cuvee, drawn from this granite-grown fruit. Vines are planted at high density on cool, north-eastern slopes that see soft morning light and are shielded from hot afternoon sun, encouraging concentration while preserving elegance. Farming favours minimal intervention and a long, slow growing season. The 2024 Yarra vintage produced fragrant, medium-bodied fruit with bright red-berry character, floral lift and fine natural acidity.

Vinification

Fruit was destemmed and fermented with wild indigenous yeasts, kept on skins for around eighteen days with frequent hand-plunging and foot-stomping and no temperature control, drawing gentle, perfumed extraction. The wine was pressed to 500-litre French oak puncheons with about 20% new oak, then left unsulphured and matured for roughly eighteen months to build texture and savoury complexity while retaining purity. It was bottled without fining or filtration. The result is a bright, medium ruby wine of dark cherry, sandalwood, dried rose and botanical notes, with refreshing acidity and fine, grippy tannins finishing ferrous and long.
