Tasting Notes

The Domaine Alain Verset Cornas 2021 is a classic, structured Syrah from the Northern Rhône, praised for its balance of dark fruit (blackberry, cherry), savory notes (cured meat, smoke), and floral hints, with firm tannins and good acidity, suggesting it's approachable young but also capable of aging, offering complexity, freshness, and typical Cornas minerality. Winemaking involves traditional whole-cluster fermentation and manual punch-downs, producing an elegant yet powerful wine that pairs well with grilled meats and game.

Vineyard Cultivation

Domaine Alain Verset is a small, traditional Cornas estate in the northern Rhone, now run by Emmanuelle Verset as Domaine A. & E. Verset, continuing a long family legacy of growers in the appellation. The vines lie in the heart of Cornas across five plots - Mazard, Champelrose, la Cote, les Cotes and a small part of the famed Reynard - on the steep, terraced granite slopes that give the wines their mineral drive and firm structure. Farming follows a regenerative approach on these demanding hillsides. The cooler, classic 2021 vintage yielded syrah of good concentration and freshness, with ripe red fruit balanced by savoury, leafy detail.

Vinification

The syrah is fermented in the traditional Cornas manner and aged for around fifteen months in older oak barrels of three to eight years, so the wood integrates without adding overt oak flavour and lets the granite terroir speak. The result is medium-bodied, framed by ripe yet gently polished tannins, with cured-meat nuances, leafy notes and ripe red fruit, showing good concentration and intensity. The élevage in seasoned barrels preserves freshness and site character, giving a wine approachable young but with the structure for extended cellaring. Bottled at around 13.5% alcohol.
