Tasting Notes

Domaine Armand Rousseau Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 offers a rare opportunity to experience the power and prestige of one of Burgundy’s most celebrated domaines at a more accessible price point than the flagship Chambertin. This big, generous warm-vintage Grand Cru delivers exceptional depth and complexity, reflecting the unique terroir and expert craftsmanship that define Rousseau’s legacy.

Hailing from an outstanding vintage, the 2018 growing season in Burgundy was characterized by ideal weather conditions, resulting in wines with rich concentration, ripe tannins, and remarkable balance. This Grand Cru captures the essence of that vintage’s generosity, revealing layers of dark cherry, ripe plum, fine spices, and subtle earthy undertones that evolve beautifully with time.

Meticulously sourced from a premium private cellar, this bottling benefits from careful selection and preservation, ensuring authenticity and quality. Stock is extremely scarce, reflecting the high demand for Rousseau wines globally and making it a high-confidence choice for both immediate enjoyment and long-term investment potential.

The wine’s structure combines serious depth and elegance, with a rich mouthfeel that balances power and finesse. Silky tannins and vibrant acidity provide excellent aging capacity, promising further complexity and refinement over the years. This is an exceptional example of Grand Cru Burgundy that exemplifies the prestige and finesse for which Armand Rousseau is renowned.

Perfect for collectors and connoisseurs seeking a distinguished addition to their cellar, the Domaine Armand Rousseau Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2018 stands as a testament to the enduring quality and allure of top-tier Burgundy wines.

Critic Scores

A very ripe yet still quite fresh nose is comprised by notes of plum liqueur, newly turned earth, violet and a whiff of the sauvage, all of which is trimmed in just enough wood to mention. The exceptionally rich and enveloping medium weight flavors possess very fine concentration while displaying impressive power on the mildly rustic finale. This is notably more robust and structured than usual.

I have the impression that the Charmes-Chambertin has been gaining a bit of concentration to its personality in recent years here, while not losing any of its longtime elegance and perfume. The 2018 had impressive depth and concentration, coupled to that signature refinement, offering up quite a black fruity bouquet this year in its mix of black cherries, black raspberries, grilled meats, raw cocoa, lovely minerality, Gevrey spices and a nice foundation of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and sappy at the core, with fine focus and grip, quite tangy acids and a very long, seamlessly tannic and complex finish. This is a superb example of Charmes.

Brisk vivid red purple, with a very pretty and quite sensual nose, raspberries and cream. Shows a little touch of volatility thereafter, but within acceptable limits. I am impressed with the density and clarity though. A good long finish too.

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru is showing very well from bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of blackberries and cassis mingled with notions of licorice, warm spices, cedar and hints of peony. Full-bodied, fleshy and enveloping, with an unusually rich core of fruit but true to the domaine's suave style, it's velvety and seamless, with succulent balancing acids and ripe, powdery tannins. With time, the puppy fat will recede and the wine will take on more classical proportions. (William Kelley)

The 2018 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru has a well-defined, slightly tertiary bouquet with light tobacco notes filtering through the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, quite peppery, fresh with a nicely structured finish. More Mazoyeres than Charmes, this coheres beautifully in the glass and develops a seductive velvety texture. (NM)
