Critic Scores

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin Les Cazetiers 1er Cru has a very composed bouquet of darker fruit than the Lavaux Saint-Jacques; there are also hints of blood orange and tangerine here. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins and superb acidity. Quite saline in the mouth, displaying real complexity and nuance toward the finish. Superb. (NM)

The 2018 Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers is showing very well, and Cyrielle Rousseau told me that while the domaine has had to replant part of their holdings in this climat, they have not yet included any young-vine fruit in this cuvee. Revealing scents of raspberries, wild berries, orange rind and rich soil tones, framed by a touch of cedary new oak, the wine is medium to full-bodied, pure and concentrated, with a lavish core of fruit, ripe tannins and a long and lively finish. (William Kelley)

A ripe if decidedly cool and restrained nose combines notes of poached plum, forest floor and a gamy hint. The succulent, rich and more concentrated medium weight flavors also brim with minerality that carries over to the powerful, muscular and serious finale that is also extremely promising though again I underscore that plenty of patience is advised. Burghound Outstanding!

The 2018 Cazetiers chez Rousseau is just a tad sappier and opulent in personality than the Lavaux St. Jacques this year (hardly a bad thing!), but I have a slight preference for the extraordinary mineral signature of the latter. That said, this too is beautiful wine in the making, wafting from the glass in a mix of black cherries, plums, dark sol tones, bitter chocolate, woodsmoke, gamebird and just a touch of nutty oak. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and quite sappy at the core, with suave, seamless tannins, a good undertow of soil tones and a long, complex and quite classy finish. This too is really good in 2018. (Drink between 2028-2055)
