Founded on an artistic whim in the 1970s, Domaine de Trévallon has risen to become one of Provence's leading fine wine estates

"Fresh, vibrant notes of blue flowers and dark berry fruit" Decanter

It was here, in 1978, a young Aubert de Villaine, recently appointed director of Domaine de la Romanée Conti, came across Trévallon, He was so impressed, he introduced his American importer Kermit Lynch to the estate.

Tasting Notes

50% Cabernet Sauvignon & 50% Syrah. Trévallon is known for its long aging process, more than 2 years for its reds. Racking is kept to a strict minimum, the lees found at the bottom of the barrels continue to nourish the wine during the ageing process. No de-stemming, no added yeast or sulphur. Aged 24 months in foudres and barrels. Fining with fresh egg white. No filtration before bottling. For several years, rainfall has been non-existent in the summer. However, in 2021 they had 20 mm in July and 25 mm in August, small but beneficial rains for the vineyard. One of the coolest summers in recent years: Average temperature of 24°C in July and August compared to 27°C in 2022.

Critic Scores

From a marginally cooler, damper year, the Syrah and Cabernet are already beginning to meld together. Tightly youthful and closed, this needs either advance decanting or be allowed to age for a few years. Fresh, vibrant notes of blue flowers and dark berry fruit on the nose opens out to concentrated, ripe blackberries, the vibrant kick of sloes and powerful, bitter black chocolate tannins, finishing with aromatic notes of black pepper and sweet allspice.. Vineyard Cultivation

Domaine de Trevallon was founded on an artistic whim in the 1970s by Eloi Durrbach in the Alpilles hills above Saint-Etienne-du-Gres, near Les Baux-de-Provence, and has become one of Provence's leading estates - so admired that Aubert de Villaine introduced importer Kermit Lynch to it in 1978. Because the wine is a roughly equal blend of cabernet sauvignon and syrah, it sits outside the Les Baux appellation and is labelled IGP Alpilles. The vines grow on rugged limestone slopes cleared from garrigue, farmed organically. After several rainless summers, 2021 brought small but beneficial rains of 20mm in July and 25mm in August, and one of the coolest recent summers, averaging 24C, giving fresh, vibrant fruit.

Vinification

The 2021 is around half cabernet sauvignon and half syrah, fermented with no de-stemming and no added yeast or sulphur, in a deliberately non-interventionist manner. It is aged for about 24 months in foudres and barrels, with racking kept to a strict minimum so the lees at the bottom of the barrels continue to nourish the wine. It is fined with fresh egg white and bottled without filtration. The result is tightly youthful and structured, with blue-flower and dark-berry aromatics, concentrated ripe blackberry, sloe and bitter dark-chocolate tannins, black pepper and allspice, at around 13.5% alcohol and built for long ageing.
