Tasting Notes

Domaine Dujac Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 2016 represents an exquisite expression of Burgundy’s legendary terroir, masterfully crafted by the Seysses family. This prestigious Grand Cru wine is a harmonious blend, with Jeremy and Alec Seysses thoughtfully splitting fruit evenly between the renowned Charmes and Mazoyeres vineyards, resulting in a beguiling and complex 2016 vintage.

The 2016 vintage in Burgundy is celebrated for its ideal growing conditions, marked by a warm and balanced growing season that produced wines with remarkable depth, finesse, and aging potential. Domaine Dujac’s approach to winemaking emphasizes traditional techniques, including whole-bunch fermentation and gentle extraction, which preserve the delicate aromatics and structure of the Pinot Noir grapes. Subsequent oak ageing adds subtle layers of complexity and elegance without overpowering the wine’s natural character.

The wine’s silky tannins and vibrant acidity provide a seamless texture and a lingering finish, showcasing the meticulous craftsmanship behind every bottle.

Critic Scores

Divided equally between Charmes itself and Mazoyères, this comes from a total of four different parcels and is always an elegant, well-balanced expression of the Grand Cru. Floral, scented and very beguiling, with red cherry and raspberry fruit flavours, nuanced tannins and a fresh, mineral-edged finish. 2022-30. (01/2018)

There are four plots in all, between Charmes and Mazoyères. Great density of purple here. Very delicious accessible fruit, then greater depth through the middle and a stonier finish. Classic vibrant raspberry fruit throughout though. Very good.

(a 50/50 blend of Charmes and Mazoyères): Bright, full red. Alluring scents of black raspberry, red cherry and rose petal; lovely classic Charmes but a bit redder than usual for this cuvee at this address. Sappy and energetic in the mouth, combining compelling sweetness of fruit with good grip. The very long, rising finish features a firm tannic structure. This grand cru will be sexy early on and should age well. (ST)

The equally pretty nose is compositionally similar to that of the Combottes but with just a bit more earth and underbrush characters. By contrast there is more volume, power and slightly better concentration as well as on the dusty, serious and mouth coating finish where the supporting tannins are slightly firmer.

Like the Echezeaux, the Charmes-Chambertin presented quite a red-fruity bouquet, bursting from the glass with aromas of red berries, plums, orange rind, espresso and a framing of cedary new oak. On the palate the wine is sapid, cool and detailed, with an expansive, giving attack. This is followed by a taut, fine-grained chassis of tannin that asserts itself, clamping down on the nicely intense finish. This will likely integrate more completely by the end of its elevage.
