A steely bite of acidity and minerality give it a racy, kinetic feel under fresh green apple and lime notes.

Tasting Notes

Scharzhofberg is one of the most famous vineyard sites in Germany, likely to have been established by the Romans. Egon Muller Kabinett is one of the world's great Riesling wines, always delicate, crisp and exquisite on the palate. Drinking brilliantly on release, a Kabinett from a great vintage can develop in the bottle for twenty or thirty years. Situated in Wiltingen in a side valley of the Saar at 180 to 280 metres elevation and facing south, the slopes of Scharzhofberger are quite steep at an incline of 30 to 60. Formed from grey Devonian slate, the soils are very deep with no underlying bedrock. Soils are very well drained yet retain sufficient moisture, a characteristic shared by many of the finest European vineyards. The Einzellage covers sixty seven acres, of which Egon Muller owns seventeen. These include three hectares of ungrafted Riesling vines planted in the last century. Kabinett is a very racy and austere wine, with superb mineral toned complexity and a steely edge of acidity, Riesling at its most ethereal. Pale gold hue. Quartz and lime, citrus and honeysuckle nose. The most striking element is its impeccable balance. A steely bite of acidity and minerality give it a racy, kinetic feel under fresh green apple and lime notes. With some air it begins to acquire a supple richness, hinting at further development to come. A brilliantly composed Riesling wine.

Vinification & Cultivation

Crafted only for our premium wines

Vineyard Cultivation

Weingut Egon Müller's heart is the Scharzhofberg vineyard, a steep slope between 190–310 metres elevation above the Saar River in Wiltingen, Mosel. The domaine owns 8.5 of the 28-hectare Grand Cru classification, including ungrafted vines from the 19th–20th centuries. Soils comprise approximately 70 per cent slate—red and grey slate with loess and clay—that warm rapidly under sun whilst retaining coolness overnight, ideal for Riesling ripening. Cultivation avoids chemical inputs; only essential fungicides are applied. Vineyards are ploughed up to six times annually. Yields remain restricted to 30–60 hectolitres per hectare. The 2023 vintage saw a dry July, wet August and warm September.

Vinification

Egon Müller harvests exclusively by hand through multiple passes, selecting grapes at precise ripeness stages. Fermentation employs indigenous yeasts in neutral large casks (1000-litre oak) rather than new oak, emphasising clarity and site expression. Spontaneous fermentation naturally ceases, preserving residual sweetness in Kabinett expressions. Malolactic fermentation is avoided, retaining acidity essential for Mosel elegance. Extended maturation allows mineral character and subtle complexity to develop, with no technical manipulation of the wine's natural progression.
